Recommended restaurants and pizza in Naples

Naples, Italy, is the city where pizza and eggplant parmigiana originated. Naples is also a good city for fresh seafood and you will find good seasonal vegetables in many restaurants. Here are recommended places to eat typical Neapolitan food and pizza in the historic center of Naples.

Campinella is a typical cheap trattoria in the heart of the historic center of Via Tiburnali. The menu (only in Italian) is written on a blackboard at the back of the restaurant. You will find a simply prepared octopus (octopus) appetizer and a very good spaghetti with seafood (frutti di mare). The portions are small enough (and affordable enough) that you can comfortably eat more than one dish. The house wine is quite good and they also have a variety of wines by the bottle.

Via dei Tribunali 47, open for lunch from Wednesday to Monday and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday.

Da Michele, making pizza since 1870, is considered by many to be the best pizza in Naples and is the one in the book “Eat, Pray, Love” (compare prices). Although the crust seemed too soft, the sauces were very tasty. They serve only two types of pizza: Margherita (said to be the original pizza made for Queen Margarita) and Marinara (without Mozzarella but with lots of garlic and oregano). It is also very inexpensive. See a photo of the pizza on Europe Travel.

Da Michele is a bit outside the historic center on Via Colletta (halfway between Via Duomo and the train station), just off Corso Umberto. When you arrive, go in to get a number; On a Sunday afternoon, you can wait half an hour.

This small family canteen is a good place for an inexpensive lunch of typical Neapolitan food. Some specialties to try are the excellent melanzane alla Parmigiana (aubergine parmigiana) and the meatballs. They have a good selection of seasonal vegetables (veg) and you can order a mixed plate or go to the counter where they are on display and point out the ones you want.

Via Sapienza 40/41. Recommended by Fiorella Squillante, Context Travel Naples Walking Tours teacher. This is the closest option to the Naples Museum of Archeology. Take Via Santa Maria di Constantinapoli and turn left into Via Sapienza.

Open for dinner only, Monday through Saturday, 8 pm to midnight. Rampe San Giovanni Maggiore 1a, in Via Mezzocannone; go up the stairs where you see the sign for Taverna dell’Arte.

The Sorbillo family has three pizzerias in Via Tribunali (between Via Nilo and the Church of Santa Maria del Purgatorio). There are cheap wood-fired pizzas and the menu lists many options for pizza toppings. Grab a bottle of wine, but the downside is that they only have plastic drinking glasses.
