Red Bull explains 'miscalculation' in Verstappen's car

One of the key days to know if Max Verstappen could consecrate himself with his second title at the 2022 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix was this Saturday in Marina Bay qualifying, but the Red Bull team made an improper mistake for a team four times world champion

In the decisive moments of the session that defines the grid positions for Sunday’s race, the Dutchman only had to beat the record of his immediate pursuer, Charles Leclerc, to start from pole position and defend the place that would give him the championship. Verstappen is aware that he will be crowned in the coming weeks, but the fierce hunger of the 25-year-old driver does not want to prolong the fight any longer until the Japanese Grand Prix.

For this reason, when he was about to set the fastest lap in Q3, he received a radio instruction explaining that he had to enter the pitlane, which left him in eighth place, far from the first place of the Monegasque’s Ferrari. .

To be champion, the Dutchman needs to win the race and that Leclerc does not finish more than eighth place, ninth in case of achieving the fastest lap, in addition to the fact that his teammate, Sergio Pérez, should be, at most, fourth. However, the move went wrong for Red Bull, since he ran out of gas a few meters from meeting Saturday’s goal.

The director of his team, Christian Horner , came out to defend him to make it known that it was not a driving error: “I think it was a miscalculation on our part, that we refueled the car for five laps, and as the track improved so quickly, we made an extra one.

“So it was perfectly timed, but obviously it’s critical to give the fuel sample [to the FIA], so that was the hardest decision in the world, when you’re going two and a half seconds faster than your previous record.” the Red Bull boss commented into the microphones.

Max Verstappen , despite showing his anger on the radio, risked being disqualified if he did not deliver the minimum fuel sample to the international federation, even if he took pole position, as has happened on previous occasions with more drivers.

“If you don’t show it, you start from the pitlane, so frustrating, but we have great pace in the car, and Checo’s performance was phenomenal to only lose by two hundredths. It’s been very tight for him,” Christian Horner said. .

Be that as it may, the current world champion will have to start from eighth place in the race in which he can add another crown to his record, and the Milton Keynes team’s head was asked about that possibility.

“I think we made it harder for ourselves by qualifying eighth, but we will give it our all. It is important for Checo to make a good start tomorrow too, so let’s see, it’s a long race,” said Horner.
