The 2022 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix saw Max Verstappen and the Red Bull team win with a crushing dominance over all of their rivals, including Ferrari, who had been their biggest rival so far, with very similar performance or at times higher.
The most surprising of all is that the Austrian team’s advisor, Helmut Marko , after seeing the obvious superiority of the Dutchman after the summer break, has set a series of goals that include his two drivers: win one out of every two races and make more doubles.
“We didn’t expect such an easy win in Belgium,” admitted Marko after the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. “To be honest, we weren’t at all sure about our chances at this track. But after the first couple of laps, we realized that Max was quicker than everyone else. He drove the whole weekend with a lot of confidence, winning easily.” .
“His victory was the result of a combination of Verstappen ‘s confidence in his own abilities and the reliability and performance of our car in general, as well as the extra that the new power unit gave us in particular.” RedBull .
While Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ standings is close to reaching 100 points over teammate Sergio Pérez and Charles Leclerc, his closest pursuers, the Austrian acknowledges that they cannot get carried away and trust that everything is practically done.
“Max has a great advantage in the championship, but there are still eight grand prix to be disputed and in each of them 25 points are distributed, and in Brazil, we will have a sprint format. So we have to continue improving, we will continue working and We will try to win at least four more races.”
Speaking more specifically about the team, Marko acknowledged that the Mexican driver must also take steps forward after having lost that momentum that made him very close to Verstappen at the start of this season.
“As for Sergio Pérez , he always improves at the end of the weekend, but I would like him to start showing his skills from the first training session on Friday. We have to get more doubles, that’s our second big goal right now”, concluded the from Red Bull .
At the moment, the energy drinks team leads the constructors’ standings with a 118-point lead over Ferrari , but they are aware that everything could change relatively easily, so adding the most doubles in the next rounds is key code.
