Remy Gardner, the Moto2 champion who emulated his father

Few families can boast of having a motorcycling world champion among their members, let alone two. That is the case with the Gardners. Wayne, the father, was one of the most outstanding pilots in the 1980s, always at the hands of Honda. The Wollongong rider won 18 grand prix in the 500cc class and became world champion in 1987 . The crocodile was part of one of the best generations of all time along with Wayne Rainey, Randy Mamola, Kevin Schwantz, Eddie Lawson or Freddie Spencer , and is one of the 31 MotoGP Legends .

In addition, he was the first Australian champion, marking the path that Mick Doohan (1994-1998) and Casey Stoner (2007 and 2011) would later follow. In 1992 he retired after injuries dogged him in his last four active seasons.

In 1998 their first child, Remy, was born. His dream was that he would also become a pilot and for this he did not hesitate to move from Sydney to Sitges (Barcelona) when he was a child. However, the Aussie has not had an easy road to becoming Moto2 world champion.

After starting in motocross and enduro, he made his debut on speed circuits at the age of 10. He went through different national championships such as the Mediterranean or the FIM CEV before debuting in 2014 in Moto3 as a substitute. The following year he played his first full season in the World Championship, but due to his height (1.78 m) he did not stand out and made the leap to Moto2.

There he cut his teeth in smaller teams such as Tasca , Tech3 and SAG , where he got his first podiums and victory (2020 Portuguese GP). In 2021 his big opportunity came at Red Bull KTM Ajo . The rest is history. Five wins, seven podiums, three pole positions and, most importantly, the title.

In this way he became the second son of a 500cc world champion who was also crowned after Kenny Roberts Jr., who achieved it in 2000 in the premier class as his father did three times (1978, 1979 and 1980). .

Starting in 2022, Remy will have a chance to match his father. His great season has taken him to MotoGP with the Tech3.

A night in jail with dad Wayne

The nickname of the crocodile was not accidental for Wayne Gardner. His strong character gave him many days of glory on the track and some disappointment outside of it. In 2016 , after a traffic brawl, he ended up in a prison in Tokyo while accompanying his son at the Japanese Grand Prix. Remy had to spend the night in the dungeon as a witness. It was worse for the former pilot, who spent 12 days in prison before being able to return to Australia.
