While Marc Márquez published on his social networks a photo on the plane already traveling to the United States, where this Thursday he will pass for the fourth time to correct the injury he has suffered in his right arm since July 2020, when he suffered a fall in Jerez, the The Repsol Honda team confirmed that it will be the German Stefan Bradl, 32, test rider and HRC reserve, who will once again take on the role of replacement for the Spanish rider.
“Stefan Bradl, HRC test rider, will be in charge of replacing Marc Márquez. The eight-time World Champion will travel to the United States this Tuesday to have another operation on his right humerus. The German Repsol Honda Team rider also knows what which is to win in Montmeló, since in his time in the intermediate category, Moto2, in 2011, Bradl climbed to the top of the Catalan podium”, explains the team in a statement.
Since Márquez’s injury, in the first race of the 2020 season, Bradl has always been the driver who has replaced him. That same year, the German contested a total of 11 races, while in 2021 he took part in a total of five grands prix. This same season, after Marc’s fall in Mandalika, the German raced in Argentina and the United States, completing a total of 18 events in less than three years.
“First I want to wish Marc all the best with his operation and subsequent recovery,” Bradl explains in the team note.
“I’m here for everything HRC and the Repsol Honda Team need until Marc returns. We’ve all seen the level of MotoGP, so we know the challenge ahead, but I’m confident that working with Honda and the team we can get something. Let’s see what the weekend holds, it will be important to do a lot of laps and prepare well for the test on Monday”, he adds.
In addition to the races that Marc will miss, on paper all the ones that remain this year (12), he will also, logically, be absent from two important tests, the only ones that will take place until the end of the course, the one that will take place this coming Monday in Barcelona and the one after the San Marino Grand Prix, in Misano, crucial practices and tests to determine the development and the way forward with the RC213V of 2023.
In principle, and despite the fact that there are still a dozen grand prix ahead until the end of the season, Honda is not considering a different rider than Bradl as a replacement for Marc Márquez. “We will replace Marc with our test rider Stefan Bradl, because it is the only possibility we have. A MotoGP bike is a complicated machine and you can’t put just any rider, you need someone with experience,” explained a voice from HRC.
