This excellent restaurant specializes in fish dishes. Satisfied locals sit at well-spaced tables on an open ground floor around the central bar. A new decor has brought all-white tables and chairs against a dark gray floor, and the sense of space is aided by a balcony with tables and chairs around the outside walls. L’Ecume des Mers offers prix fixe menus for lunch and dinner, as well as an à la carte menu where you can choose from a wide variety of dishes (where seafood is a star). The prix fixe menus range from € 18 (lunch) to € 25 at dinner and you have to order the menu as it is not automatically delivered. The à la carte options range from € 14 to € 35.

Bustling brasserie right off the main square, but more of a local favorite than a touristy one. It’s a beautiful Art Deco restaurant with all the brass cabinets and fixtures, mirrors, stools, and busy waiters. The menu encompasses all the brasserie staples: oysters, pepper steak, roast duck with orange and mussels, and more imaginative dishes as well. Everything is very well done; the cuisine is of a high standard and the place is full of happy diners, from little old ladies who eat lunch alone to large families.

Part of the group of restaurants owned and run by Marc Meurin, who is one of the leading lights of the restaurant world in northern France, the Lille outpost is located in an old house opposite the Opera. Weird corners, wood paneling, an open kitchen with a stove, a brick wall, and a gorgeous staircase make you feel like you’re in a private home. Classic dishes have a modern twist such as duck terrine with quince cannelloni and sea bass with pak choi. The daily menus from 23 to 30 euros are good.

One of Lille’s institutions, founded in 1761 and the place where Charles de Gaulle came for his favorite waffles. The beautiful original store has been expanded and there is now a tearoom behind for light meals and a restaurant off to the side for the more serious. There is also a lovely terrace to the rear for summer dining. The menu offers sandwiches, salads and more substantial dishes such as lamb and chive casserole and grilled sole with asparagus. La Part des Anges is part wine bar with a large and impressive list of wines at all prices and tastes and part restaurant. On the wine bar side, the cheese and charcuterie plates are abundant enough to make a good lunch or a light snack in the evenings. And there are other small plates on offer, noted on blackboards. The restaurant is at the back and serves good classic bistro-style dishes. It’s in an old building with brick walls and wooden floors and furniture, and it’s full of people meeting friends or relaxing after work. Menus range from 45 to 55 euros.

This is the place for good Flemish food. The estaminet, in an old building with wooden chairs, tiled floors, candles, and vintage games to play with, offers hearty dishes like soup made with local Maroilles cheese, sausage with apples, beef carbonnade , and chicken in Camembert. Everything must be washed down with local beers. You will stagger a little heavier, but very happy.

You come across this lovely local statuette in a small courtyard. Walk through the front door of a 16th-century building and enter a bustling two-story restaurant with wooden tables, chairs and floors, wall shelves, and strange artifacts and images scattered about. Expect hearty bistro-style dishes with a touch more imaginative than usual. Start with a beer-cooked seafood casserole with veggies and move on to duck with a plate of potatoes, artichokes, and truffles. Menus range from € 20 to € 39, and the beer list has some surprises.
