What happened in the 2022 Belgian GP F1 race

Sainz, who started on soft tyres, maintained his lead from pole en route to Turn 1, leading ahead of Fernando Alonso (Alpine) and the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, while Pérez slipped back to fifth despite to come out second.

Hamilton and Alonso touched at Les Combes on the opening lap, the crash sending Hamilton flying and allowing Perez – who passed Russell just behind them – to climb back up to second. Hamilton was forced to abandon at Blanchimont , when his car was smoking heavily.

Shortly after, Nicholas Latifi spun his Williams and took over Valtteri Bottas’s Alfa Romeo at Les Combes on lap two, causing a safety car .

Verstappen was eighth at the end of the first lap, two places ahead of Leclerc – but the Monegasque pitted during the safety car after reporting smoke coming from his right front tyre, dropping to 17th. The team confirmed that a sheet from the helmet’s visor had become lodged in his brake line.

The race restarted in this order: Sainz, Pérez, Russell, Alonso , Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin), Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren), Alex Albon (Williams) and Verstappen .

Verstappen, starting on soft tyres, quickly disposed of Albon at Rivage and Ricciardo at the final chicane.

By lap seven, Verstappen was already fourth after overtaking Vettel and Alonso in a clever succession of moves. He then passed Russell for third on lap 8 with DRS. Leclerc meanwhile had to battle with the drivers behind, moving up to 12th on lap 10.

Leader Sainz managed to stay out of range of Perez’s DRS, who was oddly holding Verstappen back at the time. Sainz pitted on lap 12, moments before Verstappen passed Pérez for the lead, and rejoined in traffic – he had to attack Ricciardo at Pouhon as Verstappen ran with open air ahead.

Pérez stopped on lap 15, behind Sainz but ahead of Leclerc, whom he pushed to the curbs on the way to Les Combes. Verstappen pitted a lap later and rejoined the race 4.7s behind Sainz, but on much newer medium tyres.

Verstappen DRSed past Sainz to retake the lead on lap 18, with Pérez snatching second from Sainz three laps later.

Sainz pitted again on lap 26, putting on hard tires to make it to the finish, with Leclerc also stopping to mount mediums. Leclerc passed Vettel for fifth position, which was the best he could get after his unlucky start.

The two Red Bulls also stopped again, with Verstappen winning by 17 seconds over Pérez. Russell closed in on Sainz in the closing stages until he made a mistake at Stavelot with four laps to go, allowing the Ferrari driver to retain his podium position.

Behind Russell in fourth, Leclerc stopped again to try to score the extra point for the fastest lap on soft tyres, but that allowed Alonso to pass him. On the final lap, Leclerc overtook Alonso again to snatch fourth place from him, but his final lap fell some six-tenths off Verstappen’s best and, to add insult to injury, Leclerc received a 5-second speeding penalty in the pits, which made him fall behind Alonso.

Also from Alonso came his teammate Esteban Ocon, who overtook two cars in one move in his Alpine, Vettel and Pierre Gasly, who finished ninth in AlphaTauri, despite starting from the pitlane. Albon took the last point being tenth.
