Mercedes’ George Russell held pole at the start but was overtaken by Charles Leclerc after a fantastic passing maneuver around the outside of Turn 1.
However, Leclerc ‘s chances of victory suffered a serious blow when Ferrari fitted him with the hard tires after seeing the Alpines’ problems with them.
On the other hand, his rival for the title, Max Verstappen, who changed his engine after a breakdown in qualifying, came back from tenth position and not even his spin prevented victory.
Lewis Hamilton finished second, ahead of his Mercedes teammate Russell .

What happened at the 2022 F1 Hungarian GP? career summary
Russell held onto first place at Turn 1 despite attacks from Carlos Sainz. Hamilton made a great start to overtake the two Alpines , who were too busy battling each other, to place fifth.
A virtual safety car interrupted the race to clear the track on the first lap, and the session resumed on lap 3 with Russell taking a 2.6sec lead over Sainz .
From his 10th place start, Verstappen began his comeback by overtaking Fernando Alonso and then Esteban Ocon to move up to sixth. Behind him, his teammate, Sergio Pérez , followed in his footsteps several seconds behind.
Hamilton and Verstappen used DRS to throw off Norris on lap 12, with Pérez snatching sixth from the McLaren Brit just a lap later.
Russell ‘s soft tires began to suffer against the Ferrari mediums on lap 15, and he pitted two laps later just as the Spaniard was about to enter the DRS zone. Verstappen also made his pit stop at the time to try and overtake Hamilton.
Sainz pitted a lap later and suffered a slow stop that saw him rejoin well behind George and also lost a lap to overtake an Ocon who had not yet stopped. Sainz was at that moment 3 seconds behind the Mercedes.
The Monegasque was the one who extended his pit stop the most at the head of the race, entering the pits on lap 22 and rejoining ahead of his teammate in second position, 2.7s behind Russell. Leclerc closed the gap on fresh tires and wound up overtaking Russell after a big pass on the outside of Turn 1 on lap 31 and quickly pulled away as Sainz tried to catch up with the Mercedes driver, with Verstappen slowly coming into that battle.
The Dutchman pitted again on lap 39 to attempt to undercut Russell and Sainz, prompting a response from Mercedes. Leader Leclerc also stopped, riding the hard ones as it was too early to fit the soft ones.
Verstappen gained position from Russell in the pits, while Sainz held the lead in the mids. Leclerc had no pace on the hard tire and the Dutchman took advantage of that in the first corner.
Shortly after, the Dutchman spun and the Monegasque moved back into the lead, with Russell back in the battle. Verstappen recovered and again managed to overtake Leclerc on lap 45.
Sainz pitted leading on the soft tyres, but a problem with the rear right led to a 4.7s stop. Hamilton led for many laps, but on lap 53 he put on a new set of softs, putting Verstappen in the lead as Russell passed Leclerc in the fight for second on lap 55.
Leclerc pitted again, to get rid of his hard tires as they were too slow, which dropped him to sixth place and he returned to the track on soft.
Hamilton passed Sainz for third on lap 63 and Russell two laps later. But he was 10 seconds behind the leader and couldn’t do anything about it.
A bit of rain on the last lap did not affect the result, with Verstappen crossing the finish line in first place, ahead of Hamilton, Russell, Sainz, Pérez and Leclerc.
