What happened in Free Practice 1 of the 2022 Singapore GP of F1?

Still in daylight, Max Verstappen set the pace at the start of Free Practice 1 with a 1m47.329s on medium tyres. Fernando Alonso briefly outpaced him with a 1m47.291s, before the Dutchman lowered the bar to 1m45.466s, then 1m44.748s and later 1m44.236s.

Charles Leclerc suffered a brake problem that caused him to miss a lot of track work early in FP1, and George Russell crashed his Mercedes into the barriers at Turn 11.

The teams opted for the softer compounds in the second half of the session, with Sainz brushing the wall at the exit of Turn 5.

Sergio Pérez took the lead with a 1m43.839s, before Lance Stroll crashed his Aston Martin at Turn 5. Verstappen lowered that time to 1m43.117s a few seconds before the red flag appeared to take the crashed car off the track. of Stroll with 20 minutes to go.

Hamilton surprised everyone by placing first for the first time this year with a 1m43.033s, 0.084s quicker than Verstappen. Leclerc finished third, ahead of Russell and Sainz.

What happened in Practice 2 of the Singapore GP 2022 F1?

Already under the night of Marina Bay, Russell put the media and set the pace with a 1:44.661 before his teammate was half a second faster than him. Leclerc took a long time to get back on track due to a problem with his car, as did Verstappen, who missed the first 20 minutes with a setup change to the front of his RB18.

Sainz took first place with a 1:43.231 after a great battle with Hamilton for the first place. Verstappen started on the hard tires and moved up to fifth after his first lap, 1.4s behind.

As in Free Practice 1, they switched to the softs towards the middle of the session, with Sainz holding on to the top spot with a 1m42.751s, later dropping to 1m42.587s. Russell moved up to second, with Hamilton third, three tenths back.

Leclerc, who was going the other way than the rest of the drivers, climbed to second place with means, although 0.295s behind his teammate. The Monegasque took to the track with the softs in the last 10 minutes and set a 1:42.795, 0.208s off the Spanish’s best time.

Verstappen returned to the garage to make further changes to his car, rejoining the track on the softs for the final five minutes. But he was only able to post a 1m42.926s, three tenths of a second off the fastest time, finishing fourth behind Leclerc and Russell.

Esteban Ocon was the best of the Alpine in sixth position, with Valtteri Bottas sixth and Fernando Alonso eighth.

Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri caught fire while being pushed by his mechanics back to the garage, but he emerged unhurt and was able to return to the track in the dying moments of FP2.
