Leclerc will start ahead of George Russell’s Mercedes after taking pole position in qualifying for the 2022 Formula 1 Italian GP in a session divided into three rounds where drivers were eliminated until reaching Q3. A series of grid penalties for power unit and gearbox changes will see the drivers very disorganized from their original place, with almost half of the entrants affected.
Max Verstappen, in his Red Bull, was second, ahead of the other Ferrari of Carlos Sainz Jr., but both will fall due to grid penalties.
What happened in Q1 of the Italian GP 2022 F1?
Verstappen soon set the pace with a 1m22.023s but was overtaken by both Ferraris, Sainz’s with a 1m21.348s and then Leclerc’s with a 1m21.280s . George Russell in the Mercedes also overtook Verstappen, albeit half a second off Ferrari’s pace.
The Red Bull rider improved again and reclaimed pole position on his fourth lap on tyres, with a 1m20.922s to lead the round by 0.358s. In Q1 they fell Nicholas Latifi (Williams, who skipped the Rettifilo chicane on his last lap), the Aston Martins of Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll, and the Haas duo, with Kevin Magnussen ahead of Mick Schumacher, but the Dane he lost a lap for exceeding the limits of the track that left him 11th.

What happened in Q2 of the Italian GP 2022 of F1?
Verstappen set the pace again early on with a 1m21.265s, but Sainz soon overtook him with a 1m20.878s , as Leclerc overshot the Rettifilo chicane on his opening lap. Leclerc was second on the next lap, 0.33s off the fastest time, and Verstappen dropped to third to stay 0.387s off the lead, just ahead of Sergio Pérez.
In Q2, Esteban Ocon (Alpine, who has a penalty of five positions on the grid), Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo), Nyck de Vries (who replaced Alex Albon at Williams), Guanyu Zhou (Alfa Romeo) and Yuki were eliminated. Tsunoda (who didn’t come out with his AlphaTauri as he will start from the bottom of the pack).

What happened in Q3 of the Italian GP 2022 of F1?
On the first few attempts, Sainz set the fastest time with a 1m20.584s, 0.186s quicker than Leclerc’s 1m20.770s, with Verstappen a tenth down in third. Pérez led the rest, but was almost a second behind the fastest.
On the final lap Leclerc took pole position with a 1m20.161s , 0.145s quicker than Verstappen’s 1m20.906s, with Sainz third thanks to his 1m20.429s. Pérez was fourth, ahead of the Mercedes of Hamilton and Russell.
Lando Norris was seventh after overtaking his McLaren teammate Daniel Ricciardo. Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) and Fernando Alonso (Alpine) saw their times erased by the FIA for exceeding track limits. However, Sainz will start from the back of the grid, where he will be joined by Hamilton and Tsunoda.
Verstappen will face a five-place penalty, and Perez has a ten-place penalty, so Russell will start from the front row on Sunday.
