How the 2022 F1 Emilia Romagna GP race unfolded

In wet conditions that forced everyone out on intermediate tyres, Verstappen maintained his lead from pole en route to Turn 1 as team-mate Perez and Lando Norris (McLaren) overtook Leclerc for second and third.

Behind them, Daniel Ricciardo tangled with Carlos Sainz Jr. at Tamburello , leaving Sainz stranded in the gravel as he did in the previous race, in Melbourne. Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo) also overtook Ricciardo and dropped to seventh when the Australian pitted and rejoined last.

When the Safety Car left, Verstappen was leading ahead of Pérez, Norris, Leclerc , Kevin Magnussen ( Haas ) and George Russell, whose Mercedes made the most of a great start and the chaos in front of him to move up to sixth place.

Leclerc passed Norris for third on lap 8 at Tamburello , while Magnussen and Russell dueled for fifth, with another battle at Tamburello on lap 12 before Russell held on to the Variant Alta lead. Bottas passed Magnussen at Rivazza two laps later.

The track was drying up, and Ricciardo was the first to stop for slicks on lap 17, and Pérez did the same two laps later from second position. Verstappen and Leclerc came on a lap later, with Leclerc starting just ahead of Pérez, but the Mexican regained his place at the Villeneuve chicane on already hot tyres.

Verstappen had a 10-second lead midway through the race, when Pérez suffered an excursion through the grass in the Variant Alta on lap 29. The use of DRS was allowed from lap 34 and Yuki Tsunoda ( AlphaTauri ) used it to pass Magnussen on lap 48 and to Sebastian Vettel ( Aston Martin ) on lap 54.

Leclerc pitted with 13 laps to go to put on soft tires looking for the fastest lap, dropping to fourth behind Norris before passing him on DRS a lap later, while Perez stopped for cover a lap later and Verstappen did the same. own to defend the extra point of the fastest lap.

Leclerc attacked Perez in the last 10 laps but hit the wall in Variante Alta after hitting the curb too hard. He was able to rejoin, but had to pit to fit a new front wing, which left him in ninth place.

Verstappen beat Perez by 16 seconds for his second win of the season, and Norris finished third ahead of Russell and Bottas . Leclerc passed Magnussen, Vettel and Tsunoda in the closing laps to minimize damage and take sixth. Tsunoda, Vettel, Magnussen and Lance Stroll (also with Aston Martin) rounded out the top 10.

Fernando Alonso’s Alpine was forced to abandon in the first few laps when its right pontoon blew while the Mercedes of a Lewis Hamilton passed him, who, without penalty or glory, was left out of the points. The bodywork of Alonso’s car had been damaged when Mick Schumacher hit him while he was spinning his Haas on the first lap trying to avoid Sainz and Ricciardo’s crash.
