The MotoGP race at Le Mans started in the dry, but the riders had to go in to change bikes at the end of the fifth lap, when the rain appeared.
The irruption of the water on the asphalt caught several drivers off guard, and that’s where Joan Mir fell before he could reach the pit lane and Jack Miller left the track in the last sector for blocking braking.
When asked about his opinion on flag to flag races, Rossi replied: “Personally, I don’t like flag to flag races, mainly because they are more dangerous. More than stress, it is difficult, it is more dangerous. Sometimes we have to go with the slick tire in the wet, and vice versa.
“I prefer a long race of 45 minutes, because you can set your pace, you can make your strategy. Here it is more complicated,” he justified.
Il Dottore showed good pace in the wet in Sunday’s warm up and overall was putting in a stronger weekend at Le Mans having improved his Yamaha in post-race testing in Jerez two weeks ago.
In the end, Rossi finished the French race in 11th position, after the usual Yamaha traction problems set in, but believes that in completely wet or dry conditions he could have challenged for the top 10.
“The mixed conditions were a real shame for us because I was strong in the wet,” he said. “In the morning it was a good warm up, I was fast in the wet. My pace wasn’t too bad in the dry so I could have had a good race. In the end it’s a shame, we could have done a little better.”
“I think we could have also gone out on the medium wet tire instead of the soft, but we were honestly expecting it to rain a lot later.”
“The result is nothing special, but it’s still a better weekend in which we confirmed the improvement in the Jerez test. I wasn’t too bad, I was able to stay in the fight for the top 10. But the race was like that”, riveted
