This Saturday marks ten years since the fatal accident in which Marco Simoncelli lost his life, who was at that time the best friend on the circuits of Valentino Rossi , who welcomed him like a true little brother when he arrived at the paddock.
How could it be otherwise, Valentino was asked this Saturday about this anniversary of such a sad memory.
“The moment when Sepang happened, ten years ago, I will remember forever as one of the worst of my life,” Rossi explained.
“When I went back to my office, with Uccio and Max (his friends and assistants), I didn’t know what to do. I was desperate,” he said.
“But then, when a little time passed, it was even worse. I didn’t know how I was going to push forward,” he recalls.
Simoncelli died at just 24 years old, in his best sporting moment until then, just after finishing second in the previous race, in Australia.
“We lost a great driver, but I lost a great friend. Marco was the first pilot of the Academy , although the Academy did not even exist then”, he said excitedly.
Rossi admitted that he still hasn’t gotten used to the idea of what happened and the loss of his great friend.
“I have the feeling of having seen Marco only a few months ago,” he said to capture his feelings, as if the ‘Sic’ were still among us.
For Rossi, this weekend is his last home grand prix before retiring at the end of the year and he will have to start last on the grid after failing to put in a good lap in Q1.
“The temperatures are low and the track is wet, but not completely. I never had a good feeling on the bike”, he justified.
The only joy of the day for Vale was the good performance of his brother, Luca Marini, who will start from the front row of the grid.
“Luca’s result is very important for him, especially thinking about next year,” settled Il dottore .
