Rossi: "To stay in the top 10 I have to improve a second"

After achieving his best result of the season at last year ‘s Austrian Grand Prix , Valentino Rossi kept a good tone at the start of the British weekend, finishing the first day in the top ten.

“It was a positive day because I had a good feeling with the bike from the morning, although I couldn’t show my full potential because at the end of the session I found a bit of traffic on the track and, later, they brought out the red flag”, in reference to the crash of Marc Márquez in FP1.

“In the afternoon we continued to work well, we lost a bit of time testing the rear hard rubber, which is too hard for these low temperatures. In the end I was able to do two good laps with the soft compound and get into the top ten”, summed up the Italian star.

“I had a lot of fun because Silverstone is a track that I love and with the new asphalt it is much more fun to ride the MotoGP here. It was cold, but the track was dry and this is positive in this circuit, we hope that the weekend stays in these conditions”.

“If the track stays dry, as the forecasts say, FP3 will be a crucial session and we have to stay in the top 10, but to do that I’ll need to improve my time by a second. Everyone else will be very fast and the track will get better, so we’ll have to find a way to improve ourselves too. We will try for sure.”

Rossi announced, after the summer break, that he will retire at the end of the season and, shortly after, that he is going to be a father, a radical change in his life that seems to have helped him to be more competitive than in the first part of the course.

“These are technical issues that are helping me in this second part of the season. In the first I expected to go better on some tracks, especially Assen and Barcelona , but I had problems with the bike, especially in the first few laps at the level of feeling with the front end”, he argued.

“We worked a lot during the summer and in Austria, which was a difficult role track, I felt better. This one at Silverstone should be a more favorable track, so we have to do everything possible to be in the top ten tomorrow morning. Then we’ll see how far we can go.”

The new asphalt applied in some parts of the circuit has also improved things.

“Silverstone is one of the few tracks that has probably improved with the changes. But above all, the new asphalt is a great help, because before it was different depending on the area and with many potholes, now it is very flat and offers you a lot of grip”, he assured.

“On paper it’s a good track for Yamaha , who always go strong when they have grip. It’s also a real pleasure to drive here, with a mix between old-style and modern circuits. It’s long and fast and we can use all the horsepower. I don’t know if the driver can make a difference here compared to other circuits, in the end the circuits that seem easy are not at all”, settled Il dottore .
