At the start of the 2022 Formula 1 British Grand Prix, George Russell saw him immersed in a multiple accident that caused a red flag and subsequent suspension of the race for almost an hour.
Despite the spectacular nature of the incident, no one was seriously injured. Guanyu Zhou and Alexander Albon bore the brunt of the incident, but their respective teams confirmed that they were aware. The Thai was taken to hospital for further tests.
Seeing the images, the hardest accident gave the impression of being that of the Chinese Alfa Romeo driver, who traveled several meters with the car upside down and impacted with great force against the tire barrier, such was the blow that passed over and was stranded between said protection and the fence that separates the fans from the Silverstone track.
At the start, both Russell and Zhou made a sandwich for Pierre Gasly and the AlphaTauri driver couldn’t avoid touching the left rear of the Mercedes driver, who lost control of his car and brutally hit the Alfa Romeo, causing finally caused the takeoff of the Chinese pilot and subsequent accident against the tire barriers.
At that very moment and after seeing how events had unfolded, the Mercedes driver, who despite the damage to his car could continue, made the decision to get out of the car to check if Zhou needed help.
Through the television cameras it was possible to see how Russell stopped his car and looked towards the accident area, while unfastening his seat belts before getting out of the car and running towards the Chinese driver’s Alfa Romeo, which was completely aground.
A gesture that was applauded by the fans on the circuit and also from their homes, but that ended up costing George Russell dearly, since once it was verified that Zhou was fine, or at least conscious, the Briton tried to get back behind the wheel of his Mercedes to rejoin the rest of the drivers for the restart, but that was obviously not possible, since once you leave your car on the track during a Formula 1 race, the regulations do not allow said driver to return to the race.
