Hannah Gutierrez-Reid, a trained gunsmith, came into the public eye after the accident on the film set for “Rust”. Gutierrez-Reid is said to have worked improperly during a previous film production: the trained gun expert would have given an 11-year-old actress a gun while filming “The Old Way” without checking it beforehand according to the regulations.
The production team sees the accident as the consequence of a chain of errors. The low film budget was one of the reasons. Allegedly, 24-year-old Gutierrez-Ried was preferred to an experienced armorer because of salary expectations. The long-time weapons expert Neal Zoromski had an offer to work on “Rust” on the table. But he refused.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he already had a “bad feeling” when talking to the film manager. In production, the focus was primarily on saving money. The safety of those involved has moved into the background. It is particularly negligent to make compromises when dealing with weapons: “I take my job extremely seriously. As an armorer, you have to worry about the safety of those around you. I’m the type who hand over guns to the people on set. “
The working conditions also contributed to the tense atmosphere on the “Rust” film set. Twelve-hour working days and accommodations far away from the filming locations would have led to the entire crew being overtired. However, this claim was denied by several employees. Alec Baldwin shared a long post on Instagram from Terese Magpale. The costume designer responded to all the rumors in her statement: “I worked on this film. The stories about us that we were overworked and had to work in chaotic and unsafe conditions are bullshit. […] Nobody was too tired to do their job. All of this can be checked in the daily timesheets. “

But that’s not enough for Jason Bowles and Robert Gorence. Both lawyers represent the 24-year-old and spoke about the allegations against their client in an interview with Today Exclusive. Hours before the accident, several members of the camera team left the film set in protest. The reason was the poor working conditions. “I think someone wanted to sabotage the set, wanted to prove something. Someone wanted to show that they were upset and dissatisfied, ”says Bowles. However, it is difficult to pick and suspect a single person. “We have people who left the set because they were angry. We have a time window from eleven to one o’clock during which the firearms were temporarily unattended so that there was a possibility of manipulating them. “
Ammunition had been picked up in a truck right on the film set. According to Robert Gorence, Gutierrez ‘second lawyer, the vehicle was “completely unattended at all times”.
