Sainz beats Leclerc and Verstappen in FP2 in Austria; Alonzo, 4th

After a Friday in which Formula 1 disputed free practice 1 and qualifying for the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix, due to the sprint format that this season continues to be tested in the highest category of motorsport, the single-seaters set foot on the Austrian asphalt to complete the second and last free practice of the weekend.

Due to the fact that the fastest session of the event had already taken place, and considering that the two sessions that still remained for the grand prix were races, a shorter one this Saturday and the usual one on Sunday, all the teams worked from start to finish. end focused on race simulations.

At the end of the last 60 minutes of practice, Carlos Sainz set the best time of the session with a 1:08.610 , ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, the three separated by 0.168 seconds, a minimum difference that has been maintained since the start of the weekend.

Behind, Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon placed the two Alpines as “first of the rest”, beating Sergio Pérez who could not get past sixth position and who this afternoon will start from far behind due to a penalty received at the last minute of the Friday.

George Russell, Valtteri Bottas, Lewis Hamilton, who took to the track in the final minutes after changing chassis, and Lando Norris, completed the top ten positions in FP2 at the Red Bull Ring.

Summary of Free Practice 2 of the 2022 F1 Austrian GP at the Red Bull Ring

In the first stages of Free Practice 2, almost all the drivers took to the track with the soft tires and a single objective between eyebrow and eyebrow, to make long runs to evaluate which is the best compound for the sprint race this Saturday.

From the beginning of the session and despite the fact that the times were not the most important thing, far from it in this FP2, Verstappen was placed first with a 1:09, ahead of the Ferrari, with all the drivers clearly very far from the times from yesterday Friday.

Completed the first 10 minutes, the two Alpines of Alonso and Ocon and the Mercedes of Hamilton , whose mechanics had to change the chassis after his accident in qualifying, were the only ones that remained in the garage without running.

Arriving or approaching 10 laps on the soft, almost all the drivers returned to the pits with enough data to study their strategy for this afternoon’s race. The current world leader, Verstappen, did it with a best time of 1:08.966, being the only one who managed to lower the 1:09 barrier until that moment.

FP2 was running smoothly and some drivers who bet on the media from the start, such as Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel, exceeded 20 laps with the yellow compound.

With softs, Russell was placed third and Alonso also improved and rose to fourth place, relegating Leclerc to fifth place. Meanwhile, Verstappen returned to the track with another set of new softs and improved his time; 1:08,799.

After the halfway point in Free Practice 2, Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes W13 remained in the garage without accumulating mileage.

The times ahead continued to improve, the Dutchman from Red Bull lowered his time, now with the medium, Ocon joined the 1:08 club and Leclerc , with the soft tire, registered a 1:08.660 that placed him in first position.

A few minutes later and with new softs, Alonso also lowered the 1:09 barrier and climbed to third position, ahead of his teammate and behind the two drivers who will start this afternoon from the front row of the grid in the sprint race.

Carlos Sainz did the same and with a 1:08.610 he snatched the first position of the time table from his partner, by a minimum difference of 0.050 seconds. Of the leading group, Verstappen was the only one running on medium, all the others were on soft.

Entering the final 12 minutes of FP2, Lewis Hamilton took to the track for the first time and, on the softer compound, quickly moved into the top 10, albeit behind his team-mate.

The last minutes of the session passed without major changes and practically nobody improved their times, focusing only on completing their long runs with increasingly worn tires.
