Sainz: "Many points that are missing; another missed opportunity"

After a sprint race in which Carlos Sainz maintained the third position he had achieved in the standings, the Ferrari driver wanted to improve his result. Everything seemed to be heading towards it, until the engine of his F1-75 failed with just over 10 laps to go before the checkered flag.

At the start, George Russell started very well and came to be placed in parallel with the Spanish driver, who finally managed to maintain third place, seeing how Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc escape from tenth to tenth.

Ferrari ‘s tire management was much better than Red Bull’s and both Leclerc and Sainz won the game over Max Verstappen , who seemed predestined for a third position behind the two Italian single-seaters.

However, after the second stop for the red cars, both started behind the Dutch driver again, albeit with much better pace. The Monegasque returned to first place and just when Sainz was going to do the same to secure the double, his power unit said ‘enough’, and his car ended up burning in flames and leaving him out of the race after a severe setback.

As soon as he arrived at the media area, Carlos Sainz lamented what happened at the end of the 2022 Austrian GP.

“The race went quite well, I had quite a bit of rhythm with the hard ones, but then what happened happened and it’s a shame, I don’t have many words, because there are a lot of points that we lost and another lost opportunity here, especially after of the good streak we were starting”.

“Today we had won the game for Red Bull , I had everything to overtake Max at that moment, on the next lap I was going to do it with the DRS. I think we had a guaranteed double today”.

Although the result has been the worst at all levels, the rider from Madrid prefers to be positive and draw good conclusions to close the weekend at the Red Bull Ring.

“In terms of pace, this weekend has been the best of the year so far, so I’ll stick with that. It’s a shame for the championship, but it is what it is.”

Regarding the chaos of his abandonment, in which his car was engulfed in flames and he had to get out of the car in a somewhat strange way, with the vehicle in motion, Sainz explained that he had no other option, since the stewards track were slower than usual.

“I was going uphill and suddenly I saw fire in the car, I tried to get out of the car, but it was going backwards and I was calling the marshals to come and stop it and put out the fire, but they took a long time and I had to pull the car a bit without it still being stopped”, concluded the Ferrari driver .
