Starting from second position, Fabio Quartararo suffered a crash at the fifth corner of the Assen track and, almost inevitably, the boy from the Côte d’Azur took Aleix Espargaró ahead . The Aprilia rider managed to maintain his composure and did not fall to the ground, but he did lose important positions after making a small excursion through the gravel of the Dutch track.
The incident between both drivers remained under investigation, and two hours after the end of the Dutch Grand Prix, the conclusion has been communicated through an official report from the championship organizers, confirming that the French driver and current champion of the world will receive a sanction in the form of a long lap for the next appointment.
This is the first time, since the Catalan GP, that Quartararo has faced a penalty in the race. The last one corresponds to 2021, when his suit opened during the final stages of the Barcelona race.
The French driver called Sunday’s crash at Assen a “rookie mistake”. “I was basically one lap after everyone, the team told me to go because maybe the rain was coming. But as soon as I got out I said I’d push again, but I [already] went back in because I felt a problem. We went out again and I I feel lucky not to have something broken after that”, said Fabio after finishing the test.
Quartararo called his crash with Espargaro a “rookie mistake” and felt the Aprilia rider should have won Sunday’s race, considering the pace he showed battling to fourth place from Assen.
Now the Aprilia rider is just 21 points behind Quartararo in the standings and after the penalty, the Frenchman will be required to complete a long lap during the next British Grand Prix in August.
