Scoring system in MotoGP: number of points per position

Since 1993, the first 15 drivers to complete the race have shared the points. In the event that the number of pilots who cross the finish line is lower, the remaining places remain vacant and those points are not distributed. The current system greatly rewards the first positions (from 1st to 5th), with the difference from 5th to 15th being one point for each place.

In addition, for the drivers’ championship, all the results are computed, unlike in previous times, where the worst of the year for each driver were discounted.

The system has evolved over the years, expanding the number of drivers who score points. Currently, the author of the fastest lap or pole position is not rewarded in MotoGP either .

The current MotoGP scoring system, in force since 1993, distributes the points as follows:

  • 1st place (winner) 25 points
  • 2nd place 20 points
  • 3rd place 16 points
  • 4th place 13 points
  • 5th classified 11 points
  • 6th classified 10 points
  • 7th classified 9 points
  • 8th place 8 points
  • 9th place 7 points
  • 10th classified 6 points
  • 11th classified 5 points
  • 12th classified 4 points
  • 13th classified 3 points
  • 14th classified 2 points
  • 15th classified 1 point

What was the MotoGP scoring system like before?

In the first World Cup season in 1949 only the top five scored. For the title, only the 3 best results of each driver in the 6 races that were held were taken into account. The fastest lap awarded 1 extra point.

1st 10 points

2º 8p

3º 7p

4th 6p

5º 5p

Between 1950 and 1968 the score was reduced to the winner and the number of drivers who scored was increased from 5 to 6. Half plus one of the best races of each driver counted for the title, so that number varied each season.

2nd 6 pts

3rd 4 pts

4th 3 pts

5th 2 points

6th 1 point

From 1969 to 1987 , the top 10 classified already scored, with the winner receiving 15 points. Starting in 1977 drivers received points for all races and not just the best ones.
