One of the biggest fears when approaching a video game with a license for a product outside of this sector is not knowing when the contract will expire. The number of years varies between each license until it is withdrawn from stores, being in the case of the “disappeared” Scott Pilgrim v. The World: The Videogame only four years.
Luckily, on January 14 it returns to digital stores , along with three extra physical and limited edition editions, for all those people who could not enjoy this cult game on PS3 and Xbox 360. And the best of all is that this Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition arrives with all its content.
The same game from 2010, now complete from start
For those who do not remember what the Scott Pilgrim video game was about , it was a reinterpretation of the 2010 film, based in turn on the Bryan Lee O’Malley comic. In the game we had to face the seven exes of Ramona Flowers following the guidelines of the classic beat ’em up of “me against the neighborhood”.
Visually it was (and still is) a delight, having the designs of Paul Robertson , a true master of pixel-art who became especially famous at that time for his innumerable ultra-detailed GIFs, continuing his art today by Instagram. It was a beat ’em up , in essence, like the Kunio-kun of Technõs Japan, with River City Girls as their latest most current exponent.
It was the typical game that not only forced you to destroy the face of any enemy that came your way, but also worry about getting coins to buy food or accessories in stores and thus improve your attack parameters, life, etc. What’s more, we could level up, where we unlocked more moves for our character. And you could tell the difference between a level 1 character versus a level 16 character .
From hitting the enemy on the ground to grabbing them comfortably, to bouncing attacks and much more, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game gained exponentially in versatility as we were playing, finding ourselves in the position of sometimes having to replay a section to have more guarantees in the face of certain more aggressive bosses who set us hard traps.
Logically, the task was facilitated by playing with three other people, although there were certain obstacles, likewise, such as sharing life to revive a fallen partner. Even “steal lives” in ghost mode by exhausting all of our lives. And of course, the pique and the laughs are guaranteed. The good thing is that here we will not have to wait three years to receive the complementary online cooperative mode to the local one (yes, in the original it took three years to arrive … and for a fee), as it comes standard in this edition. In fact, it includes the Knives and Wallace DLCs .
Scott Pilgrim is still a candy in candy
Everything has been respected to the maximum with respect to the 2010 classic , so anyone who expects news will be disappointed. Now, the Boss Rush and Survival Horror modes are unlocked at the beginning, adding to the Battle Royal and Dodge Ball modes of the Knives Chau DLC, which is appreciated.
The ones that add a bit of color are Survival Horror (top image) and Dodge Ball (bottom). The first, with waves of very resistant zombies; the second, with the dodgeball that we all play at some time. None of them shine especially if we compare it with the campaign, but they are complements that are appreciated to disconnect a bit. And if it is in company, better, especially in the Battle Royal.
It is convenient to repeat, in any case, that it is the return of a game that had disappeared in 2014 and that many people were left without being able to enjoy. What’s more, the Xbox 360 version is still not backward compatible. And now it can not only be played on PS4, PS5, Xbox One or Xbox Series X | S, but PC, Switch and Stadia.
The comfort offered by this update is undeniable , being the perfect opportunity to (re) discover an ideal cult game for Scott Pilgrim fans , with a campaign consisting of seven phases that offer a variety of situations and not a few challenges to Their backs. Without forgetting the whole string of winks, from Super Mario Bros. 3 to a limousine of the mythical Fantastic Car KITT.
As long as you like beat ’em up , you should give it a try, especially if you couldn’t buy their two DLCs at the time, which is also fun to control the aforementioned Knives Chau and Wallace Wells with their own attacks, beyond Scott Pilgrim (of course), Ramona Flowers, Kim Pine and Stephen Stills.
In short, beyond not providing any novelty compared to the 2010 original, this Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition is the ideal excuse to continue enjoying that geek universe that we love so much. And that’s cool.
