Aston Martin entered the 2022 Formula 1 season with high hopes and the intention that Sebastian Vettel’s experience would help them along the way. However, the situation has turned out to be different and, after the first half of the season, the team is ninth ahead of Williams in the constructors’ championship.
Although the Aston seems to have optimal performance in the race, the situation is different on Saturdays at one lap, where they don’t seem to find the pace to constantly fight to get into Q2.
According to Vettel , the main weakness of the AMR22 is the sequencing of performance and that puts them at a disadvantage from Saturday, when they are already committed to having to come back in the race.
“Our weak point is our pace in qualifying,” said the German after the Hungarian Grand Prix, the last race before the summer break. “If we can qualify higher at the beginning of the race, we can fight in the middle group.”
“I was happy with the speed of the car on Friday, but on Saturday things always went wrong. That’s why I was always unhappy after qualifying.”
“When we got to the race we were able to recover the situation,” said the four-time world champion, who finished 10th at the Hungaroring.
In the season, Vettel has only scored points in five races: Emilia Romagna, Monaco, Azerbaijan, Great Britain and Hungary, with a sixth place in Baku as his best result of 2023, a sum that has him with only 16 points and in the 14th place in the championship.
Looking ahead to the final part of the season, Vettel hopes the situation will improve for what will be his last races on the F1 grid.
“I’m looking forward to the future. I’m looking forward to the summer break and the rest of the season. I’ll keep pushing with all my might,” said the man who will be replaced by Fernando Alonso at the Aston Martin team in 2023.
