Shaker Lakes Nature Center

The Shaker Lakes Nature Center, founded in 1966, is a tranquil green space nestled between the elegant homes of Shaker Heights, only each one from Cleveland. The facility features a variety of trails illustrating six natural habitats, as well as a nature center with exhibits on the Northeast Ohio landscape. Best of all, admission is free.

The paths:

The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes has a variety of trails that illustrate six natural habitats: lake, stream, swamp, field, ravine, and forest. Among the trails is the All Peoples Trail, a 1/3 mile barrier-free boardwalk that stretches over the swamp. The APT can be accessed via a ramp. Another highlight is the Stearns Trail, a half-mile trail that winds around the downtown wildflower garden.

The visitor center:

The recently expanded Nature Center has 11,000 square feet of space. The Center features exhibits on plants and animals from Northeast Ohio, as well as a gift shop, classroom, library, and meeting room. Right next to the building there is an observation deck.

Events:

The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes hosts a full calendar of special events. These include nature walks, a photography club, and brown bag lunches. The Nature Center also offers a series of summer camps for children.

Hours:

The trails at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes are open daily from sunrise to sunset. The Nature Center is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm Admission is free.

Rent the Nature Center:

The Nature Center is a perfect place to host a birthday party or other special event. The Center offers b’earth’day packages for children’s parties that include room rental, dessert, and a one-hour program led by a naturalist. For more information, see the Center’s website.
