SoberRide is a free taxi ride program provided by the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) to provide a safe way home for disabled drivers during high-risk periods of the year. Currently, SoberRide operates during the December / January holiday season, St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Independence Day, and Halloween. Taxi rides are free, up to a fee of $ 30. Callers are financially responsible for anything in excess of $ 30.
In 2017, SoberRide formed a partnership with the rideshare platform Lyft. SoberRide is offered through the Lyft mobile app throughout Lyft’s Washington, DC coverage area, which includes all or part of: the District of Columbia; Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland; and Northern Virginia counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William. For example: this Halloween weekend, a Lyft promo code allowed the first 1,500 Lyft riders within a specified time period up to $ 15 off a trip home taken in DC
coverage area.
SoberRide Guidelines
- You must be 21 years of age or older to use the SoberRide service.
- You cannot book a taxi for a future time. You should call when you need a ride and you should wait 30 to 60 minutes for it to arrive.
- If you are calling from a cell phone, you must have a Maryland, Virginia, or Washington DC area code.
- All calls must originate in one of the following jurisdictions: Washington, DC – anywhere in the city; Maryland: Montgomery and Prince George counties; Virginia: Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, and eastern Loudoun counties.

Alternative app-based transportation services
Advanced transportation can be arranged by using other application-based services. These services charge a fee, but are generally less expensive than a traditional taxi. If you know you are going to drink, it is a good idea to plan your way home and make sure you stay safe. Contact the supplier directly or via their app to organize the trip.
Uber – The company offers a low-cost transportation alternative for travelers who use a mobile app on a smartphone to submit a ride request. Uber drivers use their own cars and the prices are similar to those of a taxi. Payment is handled exclusively through Uber and not with the driver personally.
