Tapas are not a type of food, nor is it simply Spanish for ‘small plates’. They are a way of eating, usually on foot, hopping from bar to bar, with a beer or a glass of wine in hand.
The tapas culture in Barcelona is not as great as in Seville or San Sebastián.
Standard tapas tour
Try the most famous Spanish tapas, such as tortilla and ham. Groups tend to be larger, so the bars tend to be more touristy, but this is a great introduction to tapas in Spain.

Spanish cava tour
Spaniards like to call Cava ‘Spanish Champagne’. The rest of us call it a very drinkable bubbly. Cava is a very Catalan drink (Catalonia is the region where you will find Barcelona), so much so that every time the Catalans annoy the rest of the Spanish, it is the sales of cava that fall first in the country, out of spite.

Wine tasting in Barcelona
Taste the classic reds of Spain, as well as its lesser-known whites, at this wine tasting session in central Barcelona.
This session takes place in a wine shop, which may not have the atmosphere of a winery, but ensures an unbiased session that does not push you to buy a particular wine. The session lasts an hour and a half, during which you will taste four wines.

I have tried preparing these three dishes and I can assure you that seeing an expert prepare them for the first time helps tremendously. Gazpacho and tortilla are simple dishes, but getting exactly correct sizes and quantities is difficult with guidance on your first try. Paella is a bit more complicated to prepare – getting the rice to cook right on your first try is difficult without the help of an expert eye.
