Spanish National Anthem Lyrics through the years

In January 2008, new lyrics to the Spanish national anthem, La Marcha Real , were revealed. The Spanish national anthem had no lyrics since the death of dictator General Franco in the 1970s. But when the Spanish Olympic Committee heard fans of the English soccer team Liverpool FC sing the club’s anthem , Never Never Walk Alone , it was decided that Spain should also have the lyrics of its national anthem.

However, many Spaniards have ridiculed the idea and the lyrics never realized it.

On this page, you will find the modern letters proposed in Spanish and English, as well as the letters of the Franco era, the letters of King Alfonso XIII and the first known letters, written by the poet Ventura de Vega.

Proposed lyrics to the Spanish national anthem

Long live Spain!
Let’s all sing together
with different voice
and one heart.
Long live Spain!
From the green valleys
to the immense sea,
a hymn and brotherhood.
Love the country
because he knows how to hug,
under its blue sky,
peoples in freedom.
Glory to the children
that give history
justice and greatness
democracy and peace.

English translation of the new lyrics of the Spanish national anthem

Long live Spain!
We sing together
with different voices
and one heart.
Long live Spain!
From the green valleys
to the immense sea,
a brotherhood hymn.
Love the country,
who knows how to hug,
under the blue sky, at
people in freedom.
Glory to the children,
that they have given to history,
justice and greatness,
democracy and peace.

Spanish national anthem under Franco

Long live Spain, raise your arms, children
of the Spanish people,
that resurfaces again.
Glory to the country that he knew how to follow,
on the blue of the sea the walk of the sun.
Glory to the country that he knew how to follow,
on the blue of the sea the walk of the sun.
Spain triumphs! The anvils and the wheels
they sing to the beat
of the hymn of faith.
Spain triumphs! The anvils and the wheels
they sing to the beat
of the hymn of faith.
Together with them let’s sing standing
the new and strong life of work and peace.
Together with them let’s sing standing
the new and strong life of work and peace.

Long live Spain, raise your arms, children
of the Spanish people,
that resurfaces again.
Long live Spain, raise your arms, children
of the Spanish people,
that resurfaces again.
Glory to the country that he knew how to follow,
on the blue of the sea the walk of the sun.
Glory to the country that he knew how to follow,
on the blue of the sea the walk of the sun.

Spanish national anthem under Alfonso XIII

Glory, glory, crown of the Fatherland,
sovereign light
which is gold on your banner.
Life, life, future of the Homeland,
what in your eyes is
open heart.
Purple and gold: immortal flag;
in your colors, together, flesh and soul are.
Purple and gold: want and achieve;
You are, flag, the sign of human eagerness.
Glory, glory, crown of the Fatherland,
sovereign light
which is gold on your banner.
Purple and gold: immortal flag;
in your colors, together, flesh and soul are.
