If the first practice session of the Monaco GP showed maximum equality between Ferrari and Red Bull, in the second the Cavallino were ahead with the Pirelli soft tire, and Leclerc led again. Sainz showed that he adapts well to the Monte Carlo circuit, staying just 44 thousandths behind the Monegasque (0.044s), completing a one-two for Ferrari.
As in FP1, Sergio Pérez managed to be ahead of Max Verstappen, just in a week in which much has been said about the team orders he received and that prevented him from winning in Spain. The Mexican said this Friday that he was free to fight, and for now he has apparently started better.
Lando Norris confirmed that the McLaren is suited to the streets of the Principality , with fifth position being the face of the team. The cross, again, for a Daniel Ricciardo who continues his ordeal and who suffered a spectacular accident in the Pool area (turns 14 and 15) when we had only played 15 minutes. The Australian was the only driver not to set a time, and ended up closing the table.
George Russell was the only Mercedes inside the top 10, while Hamilton only settled for 12th position, more than half a second behind his young neighbour. The seven – time champion had a slight run off the track at Mirabeau , while several riders went off again at Santa Devota .
The two AlphaTauri did make it into the top ten, with Gasly seventh and Tsunoda tenth. Among them, a fast Fernando Alonso with soft tires (8th) and Sebastian Vettel, the best Aston Martin (9th).
It was a session with corrections, the occasional scare and with tires that, despite the heat in the Monaco GP and the graining, allowed us to improve times after several laps.

Summary of FP2, second free practice session of the Monaco GP 2022 F1
After a first free practice session where we practically only saw medium and hard tyres, the second allowed us to enjoy the soft ones, the red Pirelli ones, the fastest ones.
When the light turned green, many took to the track instantly, but none did it with soft. With mediums, Pérez took the lead in his first step across the finish line, but Leclerc overtook him with hard ones to lead the table at the end of the first five minutes with a time of 1:15.762.
Verstappen dropped to 1:14.915 and took first, but still far from the most competitive times. The track was evolving and in fact Pérez put a second on Verstappen, dropping to 1:14.001, before the champion reacted by staying 0.254s behind him.
Leclerc exactly equaled Verstappen’s time, and Sainz was two tenths behind them and four tenths behind Pérez. After those first moments, Alonso was ninth as the last driver, less than a second behind the leader.
Vettel had the first scare of FP2, after almost brushing the wall in the Pool area (turn 14), where he left a rally-style image as he passed through an area where there seemed to be sawdust or sepiolite. And in the same area, just a minute later, the first accident came, that of a Ricciardo who entered past the chicane, hit the wall on the left and ended up embedding the McLaren against the Tecpro barriers at 15.
A red flag period was quickly instituted, but the stewards quickly cleared the area and the session was only halted for around five minutes. When it resumed, there were still 37 to go, and again several cars rolled out.
It was at that moment that we saw many drivers appear on soft tyres, among them the favorite teams. With the red Pirelli, Alonso was placed first, but Pérez instantly overtook him by almost six tenths. Verstappen again fell behind his teammate, albeit by 0.031s. Hamilton failed to beat Alonso, Kevin Magnussen, or the brand that Leclerc had with hard.
Pérez announced on the radio that he had lost a rearview mirror, probably after hitting a wall. Russell’s first attempt on softs left him half a second behind Red Bull in third, a fraction ahead of Alonso, and Leclerc dropped to 1m13.125s to lead with a 0.199s lead over Perez.
Verstappen beat Leclerc by 0.022s, but the Monegasque responded by scoring three tenths on his rival with a record in the first and third sectors. The Ferrari driver was the first driver to go down to 1:12, and Sainz moved up to second place, although still in 1:13.
After the first attack on softs, Alonso was sixth, and Hamilton was far behind, tenth. The Englishman also marked an excursion through Mirabeau, and the traffic that was at that time on the circuit made him stay there for a few moments.
The table kept changing, and Leclerc lowered his record even more. Pérez stole second place from Sainz, but the Madrid native took little time to recover it. Norris confirmed McLaren’s strong performance with fifth position, ahead of Russell.
The tires showed little degradation, and on his tenth lap on the tyre, on a track in better condition, Sainz fell 44 thousandths behind his teammate. At that time Leclerc was inside the box while Ferrari worked on the car, but when he went out on track, he focused on testing race pace, like the rest, and the table did not change again.
The excursions through Santa Devota continued to the checkered flag and, once FP2 was over, we again saw a rehearsal of starts on the main straight.
