Stroll saw Fernando Alonso as a "villain" in F1

The signing of Fernando Alonso by Aston Martin for the 2023 Formula 1 season surprised the entire paddock, including those within the British team. The one closest to the Spaniard at Silverstone will be Lance Stroll, son of the English team’s owner, Lawrence, and driver of the team since 2019, when he joined Racing Point from Williams.

The Canadian made his Grand Circus debut two courses earlier, in 2017, and at just 18 years, 4 months and 26 days he became the second youngest to participate in a race. Furthermore, in Baku, by just 12 days difference from Max Verstappen, he made history by being the second earliest to get on the podium in Formula 1.

His passion for the category comes from afar, and in the run-up to the Italian Grand Prix he spoke about his past, emphasizing his future teammate at Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso: “I remember seeing him on television, in 2004, 2005 and 2006, when he won his championships, fighting Schumacher.”

“I was a follower of Schumacher, he [Alonso] was the bad guy for me!” he exclaimed with a laugh. “I was like six years old, you know, and he was… yeah, like in the movies, what’s his name? The villain! But anyway, he was always very, very exciting and fun to watch.”

“He still is, I mean, he’s one of the best drivers out there, he’s still fighting at 41 years old or whatever,” explained the Canadian, who has a funny anecdote about how he met the Spaniard.

Lance Stroll had an encounter when he was only 10 years old with Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso at the time when they were both at Ferrari, and at that time nobody could venture what would happen in the future.

The man from Oviedo joked at the time about whether he would be a teammate of the Canadian, explaining: “I think we were talking about Ferrari and I told him I wasn’t sure how long he was going to be in the team.”

“You are 10 years old, so let’s see if we meet one day at Ferrari,” said Alonso. “At that time, maybe I didn’t plan to stay that long in Formula 1, so I’m happy to share a team with him.”

“Now we’ve known each other for more than 12 or 13 years, and with Lawrence [Stroll] as well. And yes, I think he’s very talented, we see spikes from time to time. Also at Spa, he was 4th on Friday when I spoke to him, and then on Saturday, maybe it wasn’t that fast, but I think there’s potential, so I’m looking forward,” said the two-time champion.

Lance Stroll also remembers that anecdote : “That was the first time I met him, when I was at the Ferrari Driver Academy. I think he was about 10 years old in the photo, and not many words came out of my mouth, because I was shocked by the experience”.

“I think I could have warned him,” the Aston Martin driver said of the possibility that they might be Formula 1 teammates. “I think he’ll be fine, he’s a great driver, I’m looking forward to that moment.”

“The next season is exciting, the people in the factory are working very hard, and there are a lot of things for next year. So I am looking forward to it, and then also to work together with Fernando [Alonso], of course. “, concluded the Canadian.
