Since Motorsport.com uncovered Suzuki’s intention to leave the MotoGP World Championship on May 2, information confirmed by the interested parties ten days later, the Hamamatsu manufacturer’s team has only managed to add thirteen of the 200 points at stake, losing any chance of fighting for the championships, both for drivers, constructors and teams.
The informative bomb of the season was discovered on the Monday after the Spanish Grand Prix, in which Joan Mir finished sixth and Alex Rins 19th after a race in which, he assured, “riding the Suzuki today was like putting a cat in the water”, due to the vibration problems it had suffered.
The test day in Jerez presented itself as an opportunity for the team to straighten out a course that had drifted after the two podium finishes for Rins in Argentina (3rd) and Austin (2nd), and fourth place in Portimao, which had placed Barcelona as second overall in the championship tied on 69 points with the leader, Fabio Quartararo after five races. But at the end of that day everything was blown up.
After learning the news, Suzuki’s human group in the races closed ranks and conspired to continue despite the impact and state of shock in which they had plunged.
“We have to keep doing what we are doing. There is a choice to collapse, or to keep pushing, with our heads held high. Looking at the mechanics, that is what they have decided to follow and so have I,” Rins said Thursday. at Le Mans, becoming the first member of the team to face the media.
Since then, the MotoGP World Championship has discounted four weekends of competition, the grand prix of France, Italy, Catalonia and, this past Sunday, that of Germany, and Suzuki has gone from fighting for the team, constructor and rider title , with Rins, to absolutely lose the rudder.
In Le Mans, where Suzuki confirmed his exit through the back door of the championship despite having a mandatory contract until the end of 2026, neither of the two brand drivers finished the race, as in Mugello the following week. In Barcelona, Mir managed to finish fourth and add 13 points, with a new zero for Rins. At the Sachsenring this past Sunday, the 2020 world champion crashed on the fifth lap, while Rins, affected by a hand injury, did not take part in the race, accumulating his fourth race without scoring, or whatever. himself, all since the news broke.
At a statistical level, in the first six races of the course, Rins and Mir added a total of 125 points between them, an average of 20’83 out of 50. Since that fateful day, in four races, between both drivers they have counted 13 points over 200, a mean of 3.25.
The state of mind of the members of the team is, without a doubt, the main cause of this situation, even though the professionalism of the entire Suzuki squad in the MotoGP paddock is not only beyond doubt, but has also been considered, in recent years, as the true benchmark of the category.
However, receiving news of such magnitude, knowing that you are out of a job at a time when there is an unprecedented crisis worldwide and the urgent need to seek accommodation as soon as possible, has meant an explosive cocktail.
As much as everyone takes for granted that Mir will race next year with Honda, and that Rins seems to have a place, more or less assured, everything now points to LCR, the rest of the fifty team members are under enormous pressure . Some have already secured their future, even some at a high level, but logically, out of respect for their colleagues who do not have it, they prefer not to make it public.
The atmosphere in the team, which until recently was an example in the paddock, has deteriorated, as Mir himself acknowledged at Mugello.
“It’s not the first time I’ve had problems outside of sports, and I think I know how to separate things. But it’s clear that there isn’t the harmony in the team that there was before,” admitted the double world champion.
Mir then asked for an effort to straighten out the situation.
“We have to do something, because spending a year like this can be very long.” Two races later, the team adds three more zeros and a lonely fourth place (13 points) in Barcelona, confirming that, indeed, the season is going to be very long for Suzuki.
