Plants are blooming earlier than anticipated by controlled environmental warming experiments, according to an analysis of data from 1,558 plant species from four continents, collected over decades. The findings are published today in the journal Nature.
It's called the biradical Criegee, and despite its unattractive name, this particle could be very useful in naturally cleaning the atmosphere and partially offsetting global warming. A work published in Science analyzes the revolutionary effects of this strange molecule.
According to predictions, the next ice age that will mark the end of the warm period we now enjoy should begin 1,500 years from now. However, the amount of greenhouse gases that accumulate in the Earth's atmosphere could interfere with the usual patterns and could delay the next ice age by tens of thousands of years.
The Arctic ice sheet reaches its all-time low and confirms the worst forecasts. Since the ice sheet began to be measured by satellite in 1972, levels have never been so low. The figures are similar to those obtained in 2007, a year that until now marked the minimum, which shows that we are immersed in a new stage marked by a much lower presence of ice in summer than was normal until now.
Spain has become the headquarters of the LifeWatch project thanks to the "excellent scientific quality" in the area of the country's biodiversity, which holds almost half of the European plant endemisms. The research work related to LifeWatch will allow to evaluate in a virtual laboratory, through simulators, the impact of global warming, urban development or the installation in its environment of an industrial nucleus, on certain geographical areas.
Many people are skeptical about whether the planet's climate is changing, but the degree of their skepticism varies systematically depending on what words we use. According to an American study, there are more people who believe in "climate change" than in "global warming."
An international study in which Spanish scientists participate has shown that the heat wave that affected Europe in the summer of 2010 was warmer and more intense than that of 2003. The research indicates that large heat waves such as the one in 2010 could return to occur from 2050 and increase in frequency towards the end of the century as a consequence of global warming.
On the occasion of the last Climate Change Summit that was held in Copenhagen a year ago, an image similar to this one went around the world. Its objective was to denounce how, supposedly, global warming forced white bears to cannibalism.
Danni Büchner is invited to Sam Dylan's Halloween party. But the "Goodbye Germany" emigrant has no desire for many other party guests. And find clear words.
