The project will be helmed by Joseph Kosinski , the director of Tron: Legacy Oblivion, Only the Brave, and the recent hit Top Gun: Maverick , and like the last-mentioned film, will be produced by the legendary Jerry Bruckheimer , whose extensive resume includes to the original Top Gun, NASCAR Days of Thunder, The Rock, Con Air, Black Hawk Down and the Pirates of the Caribbean saga.
With a script by Ehren Kruger , who also wrote Top Gun: Maverick , the story will revolve around a veteran pilot who serves as a mentor to a promising youngster. Lewis Hamilton will be closely associated with the project as a producer, and his manager, Penni Thow , will also be involved, as Apple Screen will finance the film.
All team principals were invited on the Friday day of the 2022 F1 United States GP to a meeting with Pitt, Bruckheimer and Kosinski, as well as the category president, Stefano Domenicalli . The meeting was an opportunity for the Hollywood stars to give the teams an idea of what they plan to do.
The meeting focused on a demonstration of the technology used in Top Gun: Maverick , specifically how CGI (computer generated imagery) was successfully combined with live action sequences.
Grid crews will have one-on-one meetings with the film’s producers for the rest of the weekend in Austin, though it’s not yet clear if they’ll be asked to provide current or similar cars for use in the play.
Kosinki recently stressed that filming the actual cars in action will be a key part of the production, but details are still being discussed, with Formula 1 expected to offer full cooperation, including permission to film at the grands prix.
“The idea is to capture that world in the most authentic way possible, to record real cars in real races, and to give the audience a sense of what those single-seaters are like,” he told The Playlist . “There are only 20 Formula 1 drivers in the world, it has to be one of the most exclusive clubs out there.”
“So it’s going to be a fun, unique challenge to figure out how to do it, but the experience of working with Tom [Cruise] and making Top Gun is going to be used,” one of those responsible for the feature film acknowledged.
The last time a major Hollywood production shot at the races on an official weekend was in 1976, when some scenes for the Al Paccino film Bobby Deerfield were shot in Spain, with Bernie Ecclestone ‘s Brabham team starring.
