After a first day in which the reliability of the new cars stood out above all else, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya received the single-seaters for the second consecutive day in this first week of Formula 1 pre-season testing in 2022.
As for the pilots, the afternoon started with changes in the seats. While some were still behind the wheel of their cars, Charles Leclerc, George Russell , Sebastian Vettel , Nicholas Latifi , Nikita Mazepin and Guanyu Zhou took over from their teammates.
Unlike on Wednesday, in which there was no interruption during the eight hours of activity on the track, this Thursday, February 24, has been a little different, since two cars have caused stops throughout the session. The first red flag of 2022 went to Sergio Pérez and Red Bull in the morning, while the second went to Nikita Mazepin in the afternoon.
At the end of the second day of preseason in Barcelona, Charles Leclerc and Ferrari once again demonstrated that the F1-75 is promising. The Monegasque led the timesheets on the C3 tire with a time of 1:19.689, as well as completing almost 80 laps during the afternoon session.
Pierre Gasly and Daniel Ricciardo finished second and third respectively and, despite the fact that their records were two and five tenths off the best time for Ferrari, the highlight for them were the more than 147 and 126 laps that each added during the eight hours of test.
Mercedes apparently didn’t look for times for the second day in a row, George Russell finishing fourth with a time almost a second worse than Leclerc on the same tyre, the C3. For his part, Lewis Hamilton could not get past the last position with the 1:22.562 he had achieved in the morning. The positive part for those from Brackley is that between them they managed to add more than 100 laps.
Carlos Sainz, with his morning time and 71 laps, finished fifth, ahead of Sebastian Vettel who set a 1m20.784s on the C3 tire during the afternoon session, a time that was ultimately more than a second better than his teammate’s Lance Stroll, who also completed fewer laps; 55 against the 73 of the German pilot.
Sergio Pérez could not go below 1:21.430 and finished seventh on a not very productive day for the Red Bull team, as he suffered problems with the RB18’s gearbox and did not even complete 80 laps, almost half that of Max Verstappen on the first day of testing.
Williams and Alfa Romeo improved their feelings a bit, with Alex Albon ninth and Guanyu Zhou tenth on their debut day. Although the most important thing beyond the times, was that both teams added quite a few kilometers between their two drivers, although the Swiss team could not finally reach 100 laps adding the laps of its two drivers on the track.
Mick Schumacher finished 13th with Haas, with a best time of 1:21.949 with the C3 compound, although behind a Nikita Mazepin who caused the second red flag of the day of these pre-season tests.
Finally, Alpine and Esteban Ocon could not find or did not look for the rhythm in one lap during this Thursday. Despite this, the French team added more than 120 during the eight hours of pre-season testing for the second consecutive day, without a doubt a very positive thing.
