Up to 10 drivers in the history of Formula 1 have achieved pole positions, with Lewis Hamilton holding the absolute record with 103, 35 more than the second, Michael Schumacher . One of the most recent to join the list was Lance Stroll at the 2020 Turkish GP, the third to last was, in 2021, at the Russian GP, Lando Norris, and the second to last in this 2022 Checo Pérez with his brilliant pole position in Arabia Saudi.
The latest to join this list, with a historic wet pole position at Silverstone, was Carlos Sainz.
We remember that the pole position goes to the driver who manages to start the race first, not the fastest in qualifying. In other words, if a driver leads the standings but has a previous sanction (or it is added later), when he loses his privileged position on the grid, the pole position is not counted either.
And since the sprint format was released in F1 2022, the author of the pole on those weekends is the one who wins the sprint race on Saturday, not the fastest in Friday’s classification.
This is the top 10 drivers with the most pole positions in Formula 1:
1
Lewis Hamilton
103
2
Michael Schumacher
68
3
Ayrton Senna
65
4
Sebastian Vettel
57
5
Jim Clark
33
6
Alain Prost
33
7
Nigel Mansell
32
8
Nico Rosberg
30
9
Juan Manuel Fangio
29
10
Mika Hakkinen
26
Although these are the drivers with the most pole positions, the order would be different if we refer to the percentage of classifications disputed and pole positions achieved. In that sense, the number 1 would be Juan Manuel Fangio , who added the pole in 56% of his attempts, that is, in one of every two sessions in which he participated, he took first place.
Jim Clark did it at 45%, and Alberto Ascari , who is the 22nd most poled driver, has the third best average, with a 43% pole percentage. Ayrton Senna would be fourth, with 40% and the man with the record, Hamilton , is the fifth with the best average, just over 34%.
If you have seen the complete list, there will be names that do not sound like pure Formula 1 history to you at all. You have to remember that in the first years of the world championship of the highest category, the Indianapolis 500 Miles counted for the F1 championship, but only North Americans who did not come to Europe later ran there, so they are very little known names.
This is the top 10 teams with the most pole positions in Formula 1:
