Best View: Palazzo Manfredi – Relais & Chateaux

See rates on TripAdvisor

Having the Colosseum outside your Roman hotel room is a bit like having the Eiffel Tower in view from your Parisian neighborhoods, and it’s even more magical here, given how ancient the ancient gladiator grounds are. The best place to enjoy it all? Head to the rooftop restaurant, where the food and cocktails are superb and the landmark seems almost at your fingertips, or reserve a room with a view of the Colosseum for a postcard-perfect backdrop.

Even setting aside the views, a stay at this hotel is sure to be memorable, with super-friendly staff and a location that couldn’t be more central; There are sure to be other places you’ll want to visit in what is referred to as an ‘open air museum of a city’, and many are within walking distance. The modern and well-designed rooms are equipped with many amenities (the bathtubs are particularly nice, especially with the Acqua di Parma toiletries included) and are an oasis to return to after a day strolling and enjoying the magnificent sights of Rome.

The best B&B: QuodLibet

See rates on TripAdvisor

This bed and breakfast ticks all the right boxes: excellent location; clean, comfortable rooms; friendly owners (Gianluca and Connie) —and, to top it all off, it’s just above a 24-hour bakery. QuodLibet, which in Latin translates to “whatever you wish,” is about a 10-minute walk to the Vatican but is also quite central within Rome itself — a metro stop is just one block away from the property.

There are just four rooms here, meaning that a stay here feels more like visiting a friend’s apartment — a vibe that Gianluca and Connie go out of their way to facilitate with a warm greeting and great recommendations for planning days in Rome, including suggestions on personalized maps for excellent restaurants and gelaterias. Rooms are modern and have plenty of space — as well as air conditioning, which is necessary if you’re visiting in summer. Upstairs, there’s also a gorgeous rooftop terrace where guests can have breakfast or some wine in the evenings.
