Although it is not logical, it cannot be avoided: one of the things that excites us the most when we find out that we are going to be parents is to imagine what name we are going to give it. When deciding it, there are many factors that influence, such as the names of our ancestors, those of a certain language, mythological …

Knowing which names are the most chosen also helps in our search, so here you have the latest data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) that details the 100 most frequent male and 100 female names in Spain, updated as of January 1. January 2020. Topping the list: Antonio and María Carmen.

We are not very original

It is curious that most of us parents think of original names for our children and, nevertheless, at least in Spain, the classics of always are still very popular, although the trend begins to change. That at least is what the latest INE report reflects, since the number one numbers are still the same in recent years.

Antonio is the most common name with data from 2020: 655,030 people are called like that. The top part of the ranking is completed by Manuel, José, Francisco and David.

If we refer to the compounds, 2,696,441 Spaniards contain José in their name, making it the most numerous.

As for women, María Carmen is the most common in the ID of Esapaña: 647,877 people carry it. They are followed by María, Carmen, Ana María and Josefa.

María far exceeds the rest in the compounds, 6,156,632 Spanish call themselves yes. They are followed by Carmen, Ana, Isabel and Dolores.

The 200 most frequent names in Spain

In this list you can see the 200 most frequent names of men and women in Spain. To the right of each name, you can see how many men there are in the country with that name, as well as the frequency per thousand people. As you can see, people with those popular names are over thirty and many of them even fifty.

Today’s preferred names for newborns

The names most chosen by parents today do not coincide with this list, since trends change over the years. For example, María Carmen, the most frequent in women, has not appeared in the INE statistics for a long time among the 100 names with the highest number of newborns in Spain.

Hugo, Martín and Lucas are among the 20 most frequent boy names that Spanish parents gave their newborns. Regarding the names of girls, Lucía was the most used name among the Spanish, followed by Sofía and Martina.

By Autonomous Communities, in Castilla y León, Castilla La Mancha, La Rioja and Aragón, they love Lucia, while Madrid, Extremadura, Valencian Community, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia, prefer Sofia.

Regarding masculine names, Hugo continues to be the favorite for the parents of Castilla y León, while the Cantabrians, Navarrese and Aragonese prefer Martín. Castilla-La Mancha and the Valencian Community have a soft spot for Lucas.

Touch is a very powerful connection with your baby: this is how you can...

As mothers - especially when we are first-timers - and we want to do what is best for the baby, we simply have to go with our instincts. I say this as someone who started motherhood having read a lot about it, but to whom time has taught precisely that.

When your family doesn't like the name you've chosen for your baby (and over...

One of the most transcendental decisions that are made in the incipient role of father and mother, when the baby is still in the womb, is deciding the name of your son or daughter. Trying to imagine what it will be like, discarding all those that you don't like or that remind you of someone you don't like (because let's not deny it, it's something we all do), and reaching consensus is not an easy job.
