There have been many video game adaptations over the years. Surely the Tomb Raider movie comes to mind, for example, or in April 2018 a film adaptation of the Midway Rampage game was released, also Rampage, Ready Player One and its multiple references to video games … and, The truth is that there has never been a better time for the relationship of video games and movies.
But what do you think would be the best video game movie of all time?
Does Scott Pilgrim count? I don’t think it’s technically a “video game movie,” but it comes close. Wreck-It Ralph is a loving tribute to the environment we love. There are others with less success like Super Mario Bros. Does anyone remember the Prince of Persia movie with Jake Gyllenhall? It is likely that you will not be left with too positive a memory.
However, films like Street Fighter: The Movie represent a masterpiece, mainly due to the incredible performance of the legendary actor Raúl Juliá. Juliá suffered from stomach cancer – a disease that would soon claim her life. But this frail and sickly-looking man managed to muster up enough energy to deliver a fantastic comic villain performance.
Recently in March 2018 we saw a Lara Croft again in theaters under Tomb Raider. In it they show us the brutality of Lara’s journey to become a grave robber. Actress Alicia Vikander, despite her fake British accent, is a nice and charismatic Lara. The fights with her had a weight and impact that I think a lot of video games can easily convey because you personally feel it through the game controls, whereas the movies have a harder time. Well, the truth is that the Lara Croft in the movie is a good counterpart to the Lara in video games.
Be that as it may, it’s clear that these days, movie studios have finally noticed that video games have their own brilliant stories that deserve decent adaptations.
