SportF1The biggest challenge of the new Haas F1 car...

The biggest challenge of the new Haas F1 car (and the rest?)

Haas has been the first team to present the new 2022 car this Friday, and although basically what we have seen has been the new decoration, they have also let slip some other concept of the new single-seaters.

After a year without development, focusing on the VF-22 of this course, Haas hopes to take a step forward that will take him out of the last position, and from his technical department, led by Simone Resta , they have pointed out that the biggest headache for the manufacture of the new Formula 1 has been the weight.

Finally, the category established a limit of 795 kg (30 kilos more than what was planned in principle for the new regulation), and Resta, ex-Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, spoke about what that meant.

“We faced two main challenges with this car. First, the specifications for the construction of the chassis. With the 2022 rules, the monocoque has been heavily revised for safety reasons. Some components had to be 150% load bearing. higher and greater safety tests. That translates into the second challenge, an increase in weight compared to 2021. It is probably the most complicated car to manufacture in the last twenty years.”

“It’s a challenge within a challenge, because to create a car so different from the recent past we had to study new working methods, processes and structures within the team.”

And even before going out on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya track for the first time on February 23, Haas already knows where he will have to work more: “The challenge of the weight of the cars is evident that we have to improve immediately. We expect great improvements in terms of performance week after week, so I think there is both the potential and the opportunities to improve over the course of the championship, and I am convinced that all the teams will improve.”

The Haas chassis continues to be manufactured by Dallara , and the American team also works closely with technicians from Ferrari, its engine supplier.

After a 2021 where the cars were developed on the basis of those of 2022, F1 is facing a new era, and speaking of those modifications that have had to be made, Simone Resta insists that it has been designed on a blank sheet of paper: “The The biggest change concerns the aerodynamics: from that point of view it is a complete revolution, because the rules are totally different.

“The brakes and the brake lines have changed enormously, it is not a revolution in the strict sense, but it is a big change. In terms of other aspects, beyond the pedals, the steering wheel and the fire extinguisher, there is nothing like it. Everything It has changed”.

It is taken for granted that sooner or later the teams will end up having very similar designs, and even from Ferrari they consider that in 2023 there will be very few differences in terms of style. “In some respects the design freedom has been limited compared to the past, but the key is in the details, so I expect to see different philosophies and approaches between the different cars,” says Resta.

Finally, and speaking of how the collaboration with Ferrari has been this year, far from Alfa Romeo’s decision to differentiate itself from those of the Cavallino, Haas is looking for even more of a relationship.

“The team has been working closely with Ferrari since 2016 and in recent years the collaboration has increased step by step. We are doing everything possible to keep increasing and improving the synergies that involve us. I have been at Ferrari for a long time, so I know The team did well and that helped me. I’m happy with the results we’ve achieved. Ferrari supplies us with several components, even though the parts involved have changed over the years according to the regulations.”

Will Haas be able to get out of the hole and return to a middle zone where he had a leading role in his first years in the category? The next few months we will have the answer.
