The "complex" operation on Marc Márquez was "a success"

The Honda rider entered Dr. Joaquín Sánchez-Sotelo ‘s operating room around eight in the morning (Minnesota time, seven hours less than in Europe), and after 180 minutes of a “complex” surgical intervention on the humerus of his right arm, the doctor declared the surgery “successful”. The best possible news.

“Marc Márquez has completed the operation of his right humerus at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (Minnesota). The medical team has considered that the operation has been a success and that Márquez’s recovery begins”, begins the statement made public by Honda this Friday morning.

“During three hours, Dr. Joaquín Sánchez Sotelo and his team performed a humeral osteotomy. Dr. Sánchez Sotelo considered the operation a success without complications, while Marc Márquez entered the postoperative phase of his treatment at the Mayo Clinic,” the note continues.

The Catalan driver, as he explained last Sunday during the Italian GP, will remain in the United States for the next few days to guarantee his immediate postoperative recovery before returning to Spain to continue with his treatment plan.

“Today we had the opportunity to operate on Mr. Marc Márquez ‘s right humerus. The procedure was completed in approximately three hours. Despite the complexity of the intervention, the final result was satisfactory,” explained Sánchez-Sotelo , MD PhD, Chairman of the Mayo Clinic Division of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

“The surgery consisted of the extraction of the two proximal screws of the posterior plate previously placed by Dr. Samuel Antuña in December 2020, followed by a rotational humeral osteotomy. This procedure consists of making a transverse cut of the humeral bone to rotate the humerus along its long axis,” so doctors had to saw the bone and reposition it.

“The amount of rotation performed this time was approximately 30 degrees of external rotation. The humerus was stabilized in the new position by an anterior plate with multiple screws. The surgery was completed without incident. We would like to wish Mr. Marquez a speedy recovery.” and a successful return to his professional career,” the statement concluded.
