Niki Stein’s lively Hamburg crime scene on ARD tells about the “power of the family” this evening. A mafia story that is as action-packed as it is precise.
Munich – So many episodes of the crime scene have passed by on ARD without being shown once that when police officers are transported, epaulettes are still handed over today – in this case they are those with three silver stars. Niki Stein, script and direction, is doing it now – and it is one of the details that the camera does not linger on, but that has meaning.
Stein has already shown on what occasion Julia Grosz, who has just been promoted to police chief (three silver stars!), Will soon wear a uniform and badge: A coffin, covered with a flag, must be received at the airport, honorable but discreet. You don’t yet find out who’s inside.
“Power of the family” today: Niki Stein tells a mafia story in the ARD crime scene
The coffin, which is unloaded in the dark, and the people, who above all look tired, resigned and frozen (yes, including the inspectors), are the brackets around the new Hamburg crime scene “Power of the Family” *. Niki Stein tells a mafia story in a Russian arms dealer variation in which the family is called Timofejew, fuels the Ukraine conflict and knows how to quote Tolstoy: “All happy families are alike, every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”
Nicolai Timofejew (Jakub Gierszal) is to be the successor of his enterprising uncle Victor (Wladimir Tarasjanz). Nicolai also thinks that Uncle Victor “does what everyone does” (deliver to war zones, really?). Andrej (Nikolay Sidorenko), Victor’s son, is more of the bon vivant type and seems satisfied with it. Marija (Tatiana Nekrasov), Nicolai’s sister, took the other side a long time ago and went to the LKA. Where, casually like Jane Bond, she holds the gun under the noses of brutal, horny boys.

ARD crime scene “Power of the family” today: Anyone who opens the bag of chips has missed the moment
But will she now – an undercover operation has just failed terribly, Grosz and Falke fish for every straw – be ready to investigate her uncle? Who raised her and Nicolai as if they were his own children after their father hanged himself.
He was an artist, a beautiful spirit, probably too soft for this rather unscrupulous family. When the siblings came across his corpse in the forest (Stein only shows his legs), it is little Marija who quickly holds her hand in front of little Nicolai’s eyes. Anyone who opens the bag of chips has already missed the moment.
Tatort on ARD today: “Power of the family” is fast, action-packed, precise
Niki Stein uses the set pieces of the TV crime genre, but he juggles with them and whoosh, a ball has disappeared or a new ball is in the game. “Power of the family” is fast, action-packed, precise, the air in the emergency room vibrates with concentration and tension. Empty spaces are risked, quite often (and probably by different people, confusing) one looks through binoculars. Not every detail should be checked for plausibility, but whether the puzzle pieces really all fell into place in the end is not so important.
To the broadcast
“Tatort: Power of the Family”, ARD, Sunday, April 18, 2021, 8.15 p.m.
Incidentally, this time Franziska Weisz will not only be promoted as Julia Grosz (we also think: overdue), she has an appointment at the end. “Aha”, says Thorsten Falke, Wotan Wilke Möhring, who was just left by his son for a woman and wanted to go out for a drink with his colleague. He sounds so disappointed that you want to comfort him. But then the credits begin and make the “Aha” the cunning, funny end.
