The first child with microcephaly due to his mother’s Zika virus infection when she was pregnant on a trip to Latin America, was born in the Neonatology area of the Hospital del Vall d’Hebron, in Barcelona (Spain). Despite the fact that the doctors detected malformations in the fetus in the 20th week of gestation, the mother did not want to interrupt the pregnancy.
This is the first birth of a baby affected by microcephaly caused by the Zika virus that occurs in Europe.
The baby was born with various malformations : a small head circumference and a proportionally small brain, a clear microcephaly that will make him dependent on external caregivers (family and health) for the rest of his life. Your brain, having not grown enough, will not work well.
The delivery, which occurred by cesarean section and without complications, allowed the baby to breathe autonomously six hours after birth.
Those responsible for Public Health of Catalonia do not rule out that at the end of the summer the contagion figures will increase , since there will probably be many people who have traveled to Latin America during the summer months. So far, the count of the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality shows that in Spain there are a total of 190 diagnosed cases.
