In an attempt to solve the porpoising problems that ruined the first part of its F1 season, Mercedes has decided to spend its time devoting more resources to the development and performance improvement of its W13.
Among those measures were a number of changes visible at the British Grand Prix, which helped Lewis Hamilton battle Ferrari for victory, before eventually claiming third on the British podium.
Mercedes , aware that it still needs to improve its records, wants to become a regular threat to its rivals in the fight for the title. For that reason, the German manufacturer is expected to introduce an update for this weekend’s race at Paul Ricard , as this weekend’s French round is seen as one of the team’s best chances for victory after sign four podiums in a row.
Mercedes director Toto Wolff said the team, along with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, was headed in the right direction but needed more. “We got three podiums in the first seven races, and now we’ve got four in the last four,” said Toto.
“I am satisfied with the path we are building and this reflects the enormous effort of the team. We need to keep chasing those last tenths and bring new developments to the cars, also this weekend in France.”
Mercedes W13 nose comparison
The full package won’t be revealed until Friday morning, but a new nose can already be seen on the W13’s design.
The new profile is flatter and more refined (in the photo above, the new version appears on top of the old), allowing it to better blend in with the rest of the nose structure and front wing. In this way, Mercedes wants to improve the top speed of the W13 and the respective drag .
The new design also features a different approach to the cooling vents at the front, although that could be caused by the high temperatures expected in France this weekend.
