The Formula 1 World Cup is red hot

Thanks to his display at the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton remains alive in a world championship that has turned red hot. Although the Mercedes driver is 14 points behind Max Verstappen , in the absence of three races he depends on himself to become eighth champion, thus surpassing the seven titles won by Michael Schumacher.

With his victory in the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix, Hamilton has six wins this season to nine for Verstappen. Thus, if the latter wins one of the three remaining races, or simply if Lewis Hamilton does not win all three, he will take the title in the event that both tie on points.

The Formula 1 championship is red hot because the point awarded by a fast lap can decide a world championship, either the Drivers ‘or the Constructors’. And it is that, thanks to the fast lap that Valtteri Bottas registered in the Grand Prix of Mexico, Mercedes maintained the first position in the classification by only one point. Now, after Hamilton and Bottas have been first and third respectively in Brazil, Mercedes leads Red Bull by 11 points .

The Constructors’ World Cup and the Overtake Award are also red hot

Ferrari’s advantage over McLaren is greater, 31.5 points after the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix. It can therefore be said that Ferrari caresses the goal it set itself at the beginning of the season, to be third in the Constructors’ World Championship. The one who can see his target slip away is Alpine. AlphaTauri , whose car is faster as they have recognized in Enstone, tied the French team on points in Mexico. After the Brazilian Grand Prix, in which Pierre Gasly was seventh, the tie on points between Alpine and AlphaTauri remains thanks to Esteban Ocon’s eighth place and Fernando Alonso’s ninth.

Alonso , too, is fully involved in the fight for the third title of the season. The Overtake Award , the award that will reward the rider who overtakes the most, is also red hot. Although Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso came tied with 104 overtakings to Brazil, the Asturian goes with 114 from Sao Paulo to 112 from the German. Will Alonso manage to stay at the top of the standings with three races to go before the end of the World Cup?

Although the entire grid moves this season between three and four engine changes, the two Mercedes drivers are the only ones who exceed that amount. Valtteri Bottas has changed his power unit six times and Lewis Hamilton has changed five. Without going any further, the Briton has changed the internal combustion unit of his car, for which he was penalized with five positions for the Brazilian Grand Prix. Fortunately for Hamilton he has won in Brazil, but he may not be lucky on another occasion.

With the amount of Mercedes engines being changed in their cars and in their client teams, hopefully there will be a penalty, ” Red Bull team boss Christian Horner warned ahead of the Turkish Grand Prix. Precisely in this race, Mercedes, who had played the distraction, changed the power unit of Lewis Hamilton.

“I hope our information is correct. According to that, Lewis will have to change engines again . Going from last place on the grid to the podium doesn’t happen so fast, ”he added. Indeed, Lewis Hamilton, who came out last, finished fifth in Istanbul.

The confidence of Red Bull and Verstappen

On the other hand, Christian Horner predicted that the fight for the World Cup would be even. “ There are no more circuits like Monza and Sochi, where Mercedes has an advantage . We are still not sure about Qatar and Saudi Arabia, then there is Abu Dhabi. I would say that it is going to be half and half in the remaining circuits ”, declared the Briton.

Max Verstappen , for his part, after the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix, pointed out: “We tried everything we could. In the end we lacked a bit of rhythm, but it was a lot of fun. We still have points of advantage. We have limited damage . It has been a difficult weekend for us, but I am confident in the next races ”.

At Red Bull not only is Verstappen optimistic, so is Helmut Marko, team advisor. According to the Austrian, one more victory will give them the title: “We continue to drive aggressively towards victory. I have always said that the season would end when Max achieved ten victories ”.

An accident could decide the World Cup

With the Formula 1 World Championship red hot, the title could also be decided the old-fashioned way; that is, with an accident favorable to the pilot who has the advantage. Asked about it at a press conference, Max Verstappen declared: “You always want to run clean . I don’t think about the title battles between two drivers in previous years, or what they did back in the day, that’s now in the past. I am focused on what I have to do on the track and on showing my best version. So you end up winning the World Cup, getting the highest number of points and finishing ahead of your rival ”.

“It is not the first time that I am in a fight for the Championship, it is the first in Formula 1 but not in my life. That doesn’t change things much, because I want to win and that’s what I’ve done in the past. When the car is capable of winning, I will win and when it is not capable, I will not win ”, added the Dutchman.
