A month ago we told you that PlatinumGames had received money from Tencent, the Chinese company that has shares in almost every corner of the industry . Now a new studio joins the club.
This is Yager Development , responsible for the great Spec Ops: The Line that came out back in 2012. Tencent has decided to make an investment of an undetermined amount in the German studio, with which they hope to expand the development of their games and business models (via VentureBeat).
These have been the words of Timo Ullman , CEO of Yager, regarding the new flow of Chinese money:
Tencent is not only the world’s leading video game company, but also a prolific investor with a stellar track record. We are pleased to join the other partners of Tencent, which is already a “who’s who” of the industry. We are confident that this will greatly improve the scope of our business, both because of having access to the Tencent network and its resources, as well as the vast knowledge of the industry they possess.
Yager’s most recent game has been The Cycle, which launched this summer on the Epic Games Store in the form of Early Access. It is a Free to Play multiplayer shooter , a type of model in which Tencent is very specialized. If it has been very successful throughout the world, it has been thanks to games like Arena of Valor, CrossFire and even League of Legends, since it also owns Riot Games.
Ullmann adds that in recent years they have been veering into F2P multiplayer territory, and that is why they needed a big investor in this area who could get them on the right track.
Little by little, the presence of the Chinese giant is expanding throughout the video game scene . It recently launched an offer to fully acquire the studio Funcom, creators of Conan Exiles.
