The statistics of the event and the drivers of the 2022 Australian GP of F1
- This was the 36th edition of the Australian Grand Prix, entering the list of the 12 most repeated events in the history of Formula 1.
- The Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne hosted this event for the 25th time, the first after 24 consecutive editions from 1996 to 2019. It is the 14th most visited track by the top flight.
- Fernando Alonso made his 337th start in F1, falling 13 short of the record for most grand prix races held by Kimi Raikkonen (350).
- Lewis Hamilton completed his 181st career with Mercedes, surpassing the record held by Michael Schumacher and Ferrari (180 races together between 1996 and 2006).
The statistics of the classification of the Australian GP of the F1 2022
- Charles Leclerc achieved his 11th career pole position, beating Jochen Rindt . It is the first time he has done it in Melbourne.
- This was the tenth different event in which Leclerc has taken a pole position. The Monegasque became the 26th pilot in history to achieve it.
- This was pole position 232 for Ferrari and 233 for a Maranello engine. Absolute records.
- Leclerc and Ferrari put an end to Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes ‘ run of six consecutive pole positions at Albert Park.
- This pole position was the first for Ferrari in Australia since Kimi Räikkönen ‘s in 2007.
- Max Verstappen’s front row on the grid at the Australian GP marked Red Bull’s first in Melbourne since 2014, when Daniel Ricciardo was second.
- Lewis Hamilton hadn’t been outside the top 3 in the Australian GP standings since 2010, when he was driving for McLaren and was 11th.
- Eliminated in Q2, Valtteri Bottas saw his record 103 grands prix finish in the top 10 (and thus reach Q3).
- Eliminated in Q1, it was the first time Sebastian Vettel had failed to make it to Q3 in Melbourne.
- With Sebastian Vettel 18th and Lance Stroll 20th, Aston Martin posted its worst qualifying result since the 2009 Spanish Grand Prix (Adrian Sutil 19th and Giancarlo Fisichella 20th), then under the Force India name.
Race stats at the 2022 F1 Australian GP
- Charles Leclerc took his fourth victory in Formula 1, equaling Dan Gurney, Bruce McLaren and Eddie Irvine. Also fourth from pole position.
- This was Ferrari ‘s 240th victory as a constructor and 241st as an engine manufacturer.
- Charles Leclerc set his 7th fastest career lap, equaling Jacques Laffite.
- It was the third consecutive fastest lap for Leclerc , being the second driver on the grid after Lewis Hamilton .
- Leclerc became the 57th driver in F1 history and the seventh on the current grid to lead a race from start to finish.
- As a result, Leclerc is the 26th driver in history to win a Grand Chelem (pole position, fastest lap and the entire race in the lead).
- Leclerc is the second Ferrari driver to complete a Grand Chelem since 2004, after Fernando Alonso at the 2010 Singapore Grand Prix.
- This performance bodes well for the Monegasque, since since 2011 any driver who has done a Grand Chelem has won the world title that same year ( Sebastian Vettel in 2011, 2012 and 2013, Lewis Hamilton in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019 , Nico Rosberg in 2016, and Max Verstappen in 2021). Nobody has achieved a Grand Chelem without becoming World Champion since… Gerhard Berger at the 1987 Australian Grand Prix!
- Leclerc led a Grand Prix for the 15th time, equaling Giancarlo Fisichella.
- Max Verstappen has completed 110 laps (77.5%) in second place this year.
- Charles Leclerc and Sergio Pérez stood on the podium for the 16th time, equaling Phil Hill . It was his second podium finish for George Russell, equaling Jean-Pierre Jabouille, Jos Verstappen, Esteban Ocon and Alex Albon.
- Charles Leclerc is 34 points ahead of George Russell in the championship, only Rosberg was doing better after three grands prix (36 points over Hamilton in 2016) since the introduction of the new points split in 2010.
- With Lando Norris 5th and Daniel Ricciardo 6th, McLaren got both of their cars into the top 6 for the first time since their one-two finish at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix.
- Guanyu Zhou finished 11th for the second time in Formula 1, beating the number of times he finished 11th during his three seasons in Formula 2 by three races.
- Fernando Alonso finished last (17th) for the first time since the 2001 Italian Grand Prix.
- There were only three DNFs during the 2022 Australian Grand Prix, the lowest number since 2013 and 2019 (also three).
- Carlos Sainz saw his streak of 17 consecutive races in the points and 31 in a row end by crossing the checkered flag after he retired on the second lap of the race. Only Hamilton (62), Ricciardo (34) and Nick Heidfeld (33) are behind.
- Forced to retire for the second time in three grands prix in 2022, Max Verstappen has the highest rate on the grid in DNFs (31 of 144 or 21.53%) ahead of Nicholas Latifi (9 of 42 or 21, 43%) .
