"The last of us": Neil Druckmann talks about the film that did not see the light

Video game adaptations to the big screen are not usually without controversial reactions from fans. The quality of these film versions often have a questionable quality, motivated mainly by the need to attract video game players to the cinema without worrying about creating a good adaptation. If the list of adaptations is reviewed, few are really saved, Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter, Doom or Assasin’s Creed have versions on the big screen that did not satisfy anyone. The only success story that is frequently formulated on this subject is that of Silent hill and, perhaps it is because horror always works fairly well on celluloid. Neill Druckmann has spoken in the Script Apart podcast about the film that was not made in his day about The Last of us. Druckmann told in the podcast that at the beginning the adaptation of his creation was going to be a film. The film was to have a script signed by himself, under the production of Sam Raimi and, while at the beginning everything seemed to be going from strength to strength, at the time of its development the project was cracking. “When I was working on the film version, a lot of the ideas were How do we make it all bigger?” remembered the Naughty Dog developer. At that beginning, the second part of the video game did not yet exist, but there was a clear concern about the dimensions of the film. Druckmann assured that these types of questions were key to understanding why the project was not carried out and that today, the television format brings them closer to the story they want to tell: «Our approach was to do it as an independent film (..) in a way that feels small and intimate. And with the series we can rely more on that because there is no need to have as many action sequences as in the game “concluded the creator. Little doubt about the creative development work of HBO and even more considering that the plot of this videojuego is close to what could be an intimate history of the chain itself. The last of us will finally be a series for HBO, but the same company also created the Uncharted game saga, which will see its protagonist Nathan Drake (played by Tom Holland) in theaters soon.
