The 2022 Formula 1 season is coming to an end, but before closing the first course with the new technical regulations, the world championship caravan will travel to the Hermanos Rodríguez Autodrome for the celebration of the Mexican Grand Prix, where the organizers wanted to do a nod to the tests that were done between 2002 and 2007 of the Champ Car.
Thus, on the weekend in which the highest category of motorsport races for the seventh time in the modern stage, spectators will enjoy a Legends Cup where twelve drivers from the past of Champ Car and IndyCar will take the controls of cars that are usually used in the Gran Turismo Series of Mexico , with 500 CV generated by their V8 engines.
Which drivers will compete in that Legends Cup at the 2022 F1 Mexican GP?
The entry list will have five local drivers who competed in the American category: Adrian Fernández , Mario Dominguez , Michel Jourdain Jr. , Roberto Gonzalez and Luis Díaz , the latter with only two races but both at home.
The Mexican stars will be accompanied by Paul Tracy , Mark Blundell , Alex Tagliani , Oriol Servià , Max Papis , Bruno Junqueira and Casey Mears , and although some were not in any event in Mexico, all of them were in that period of years in the championship.
The Mexico City race was a fairly popular stop on the Champ Car schedule prior to its merger with IndyCar in 2008, and the only past winner of this Legends Cup is Tracy, who entered in 2003, although Junqueira he was on pole position a year earlier. Other drivers who won there were Sébastien Bourdais [2004, 2006 and 2007], Kenny Brack [2002] and Justin Wilson [2005].
“Before hosting Formula 1 in Mexico, we promoted the Champ Car World Series at Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez, and it was as big as Formula 1 is today,” said the general director of the Mexican event, Federico González . “To be able to bring all those legends together for a unique event here in Mexico is a great privilege for us, and for the fans.”
“We are confident that the Legends Cup will be a successful event this year,” he continued. “It will be something very special to bring together great drivers who gave us unforgettable moments in the past.”
The last time a similar event was held on the circuit was in 1989, when Michel Jourdain Jr. attempted to make famous a race called the Challenge of Nations , a timely precursor to the A1 GP involving Chrysler stock cars and drivers. who represented their countries.
The event featured a curious mix of participants such as Derek Bell, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Gianni Morbidelli , Frank Biela , Jim Richards , John Andretti and Wilson and Christian Fittipaldi .
