The INE has announced the names that parents have chosen the most for their newborn babies in Spain in 2021. They have also detailed which are the most popular names in each of the autonomous communities of our country, and today we start with the names most chosen boy and girl in Aragon.
Most popular boy names in Aragon
The names for boys most chosen by parents for their offspring are, in order of popularity:
- Martin : comes from the Latin form Martis, which means “Mars” or “consecrated to the god Mars”
- Mateo : means “gift of God”. It is also popular in the Catalan form, Mateu.
- Hugo: of Germanic origin, it means “intelligent”, “lucid”, “insightful”.
- Lucas : Latin name meaning “he who stands out for his brilliance”, “he who was born at dawn”.
- Leo – The most popular boy’s name of the last five years. It derives from Latin and is a variant of Leon, it symbolizes the fierceness of this animal and also power and justice.
- Diego: name of Greek origin, evolution of the name of Diago, which means “doctrine”.
- Daniel: name of Hebrew origin that means “God is my judge”.
- Alejandro: of Greek origin, means “protector or winner of men”.
- Pablo: of Latin origin, means “small, humble”.
- Mario : of Hebrew origin, it is the masculine variant of Maria and means “loved by God”.

If we look at the most popular names at a national level, in general the same names coincide, with the exception of Diego and Mario, who are not in the national Top 10, but we do see them in Aragón.

- Sofia : of Greek origin and its meaning is “wisdom” or “she who possesses wisdom”.
- Julia : of Latin origin “Iulus”/”Iulia”, name with which the members of the Roman Julia family were identified. It means “consecrated to Jupiter”.
- Emma : of Germanic origin, it means “Great”, “Strong”, “Immense”, “Powerful”.
- Alba : of Latin origin, and means “Aurora”, “Dawn”, “white and shining”, “she who was born with the first light of dawn”.
- Lara : It has two possible etymologies. One indicates that it is a Russian diminutive of the name Larisa. The other indicates that it comes from Roman mythology and was the name of one of the water nymphs.
- Mary : of Hebrew origin “maryam”, its meaning is “the chosen one”, “the one loved by God”.

Vega is undoubtedly one of the trending names for girls in Spain. The average age of the people who wear it tells us that it is a name that is a “new” name that is in fashion. More than fourteen thousand girls with an average age of 6.4 years wear it.
