The most popular baby names in Asturias for boys and girls (and their meaning)

The INE has announced the names that parents have chosen the most for their newborn babies in Spain in 2021. They have also detailed which are the most popular names in each of the autonomous communities of our country.

After analyzing the trend of the most popular names in Aragon, we continue with our list of the most popular baby names according to the autonomous community and this time, we talk about the most popular names in Asturias for boys and girls, also detailing their meaning.

Most popular boy names in Asturias

The names for boys most chosen by parents for their babies are, in order of popularity:

1. Martin: comes from the Latin form Martis, which means “Mars” or “consecrated to the god Mars”

2. Matthew: means “gift from God”. It is also popular in the Catalan form, Mateu.

3. Lucas: Latin name that means “the one who stands out for his brilliance”, “the one who was born at dawn”.

4. Hugo: of Germanic origin, it means “intelligent”, “lucid”, “insightful”.

5. Marco: is a variant of Marcos. It comes from Latin and means “Hammer” and is related to the god Mars.

6. Daniel: name of Hebrew origin that means “God is my judge.”

7. Leo: the most popular boy’s name of the last five years. It derives from Latin and is a variant of Leon, it symbolizes the fierceness of this animal and also power and justice.

8. Enzo: It is an Italian name, which means “the lord of his home or his country”.

9. Manuel: of Hebrew origin, it means “God is with us”.

10. Diego: name of Greek origin, evolution of the name of Diago, which means “doctrine”.

Martín, the name most given to Asturian babies

If we compare these names with the most popular names for boys at the national level, in general we see that the majority coincide. In this way, the name of Martín -the most popular in national statistics- is also the most used for children born in Asturias.

On the contrary, the names of Marco and Diego , who occupy the fifth and tenth places of the most placed babies in Asturias, are not in the national top 10, occupying the 20th and 14th places respectively.

Most popular girl names in Asturias

The names for girls most chosen by parents for their daughters are, in order of popularity:

1. Lucía: of Latin origin “lux”, its meaning is “She who carries the light” or “She who is born of light”, in reference to girls who are born at dawn.

2. Valeria: of Latin origin and its meaning is “healthy and courageous”.

3. Martina : feminine form of Martin, of Latin origin and means “consecrated or related to the god Mars”.

4. Lara: It has two possible etymologies. One indicates that it is a Russian diminutive of the name Larisa. The other indicates that it comes from Roman mythology and was the name of one of the water nymphs.

5. Sofia: of Greek origin and its meaning is “wisdom” or “she who possesses wisdom”.

6. Julia: of Latin origin “Iulus”/”Iulia”, name with which the members of the Roman Julia family were identified. It means “consecrated to Jupiter”.

7. Mía: a short and sonorous name of Hebrew origin, diminutive of María.

8. Daniela: of Hebrew origin, whose meaning is “She who God is her judge” or “Justice of God”.

9. Carla: of Germanic origin, its meaning is “powerful”, “the one who is strong”.

10. Carmen: a traditional name that continues to ring. Of Hebrew origin, it means “Garden of God”. It is the most common female name in Spain.

Lucía, Valeria and Martina, the preferred names for Asturian girls

As we can see, the name given most often to newborns in Asturias is Lucía , which is also the most chosen at the national level. Valeria and Martina, the other two most popular names in this community, are also in the top 5 of the most popular in the entire Spanish territory.

In general, most of the most chosen names in Asturias coincide with the top 10 of the national trend, except for Mía and Lara , two very popular names among Asturian babies that, despite also being a trend in the rest of Spain, are not found in the ranking of the 10 most chosen names at the national level.
