The INE has announced the names that parents have chosen the most for their newborn babies in Spain in 2021. They have also detailed which are the most popular names in each of the autonomous communities of our country.
After analyzing the trend of most popular names in Catalonia, this time we talk about the most popular names in the Valencian Community for boys and girls, also detailing their meaning.
Most popular boy names in the Valencian Community (and their meaning)
The 10 names that parents have chosen the most in the Valencian Community for their newborn babies are, in order:
- Martin : comes from the Latin form Martis, which means “Mars” or “consecrated to the god Mars”.
- Mateo : means “gift of God”. It is also popular in the Catalan form, Mateu: Catalan form of Mateo.
- Marc – Catalan form of Marcos, which is from Latin Marcus, meaning “hallowed to Mars”, the Roman god of war.
- Hugo : of Germanic origin, it means “intelligent”, “lucid”, “insightful”.
- Lucas : comes from the Latin Lucas, and in turn from the Hellenistic Greek Loukâs, which means the great Lūcĭus, a Latin name that apparently means “he who stands out for his brilliance”, “he who was born at dawn”.
- Leo : the most popular boy’s name in Spain in the last five years. It derives from Latin and is a variant of Leon, it symbolizes the fierceness of this animal and also power and justice.
- Enzo – is an Italian given name, meaning “the lord of his home or his country”.
- Alexander : means “protector or winner of men”.
- Daniel : Name of Hebrew origin meaning “God is my judge.” In most English countries, this name is interpreted as Dannis, but the etymology is the same.
- Pablo : of Latin origin, means “small, humble”.
Martín, the name most given to Valencian babies
If we compare these names with the most popular names for boys at the national level, in general we see that the majority coincide, including the name of Martín , which coincides with the most popular in national statistics.
On the contrary, the name of Marc , which occupies the third position of the most positions for babies in the Valencian Community, is not in the national top 10, occupying position 31.
Most popular girl names in the Valencian Community (and their meaning)
The names most chosen by parents in the Valencian Community for their newborn daughters are, in order:
- Lucía : of Latin origin “lux”, its meaning is “She who carries the light” or “She who is born of light”, in reference to girls who are born at dawn.
- Sofia : of Greek origin and its meaning is “wisdom” or “the one who possesses wisdom”.
- Martina : feminine form of Martín, of Latin origin and meaning “consecrated or related to the god Mars”.
- Mary : of Hebrew origin “maryam”, its meaning is “the chosen one”, “the one loved by God”.
- Valeria : of Latin origin and its meaning is “healthy and courageous”.
- Emma : of Germanic origin, it means “Great”, “Strong”, “Immense”, “Powerful”.
- Julia : of Latin origin “Iulus”/”Iulia”, name with which the members of the Roman Julia family were identified. It means “consecrated to Jupiter”.
- Aitana : name of Basque origin meaning “glory”. In recent years it has become one of the names most chosen by families in our country.
- Vega : of Christian religious origin, due to the Marian invocation of the Virgen de la Vega, venerated in many towns in Spain.
- Alma : name of Latin origin, means “Kind”, “Gentile”, “All spirituality”.
Lucía, Sofía and Martina, the favorite names for Valencian girls
As we can see, the most popular name given to newborns in the Valencian Community is Lucía , followed by Sofía and Martina , who coincide with the most chosen at the national level. Valeria, other of the most popular names in this community, are also in the top 5 of the most placed in the entire Spanish territory.
Although most of the names appear as a trend in the rest of Spain, there are some like Aitana, Vega and Alma that are not in the ranking of the 10 most chosen names at a national level, but are on the list with the national fashion names.
