If they asked you what you think is the most common girl’s name in the world, wouldn’t you say “Maria”? I also. Most of us think that this is the most popular name in the world but at present it is not like that, because a study in which names and all their variants have been analyzed according to the language has determined that the most popular girl’s name is ” Sofia “ .
Laura Wattenberg is the name of the woman who has compared statistics from 49 countries to verify whether Maria was actually the most popular name for girls. Little by little, as he analyzed the data, he realized that Sofia, in all its variants, was leading the ranking.
In this map you can see the position that Sofia occupies in the countries studied, in all its variants, corresponding to 22 different languages: Sofia, Sophia, Sofie, Sophie, Zsófia, etc. In 9 of them it is in the first position, and in others it is not too far from the top positions.
And the name could be even more numerous, because Wattenberg explains that in many countries only one of the variants of the name is counted . If, for example, there is a country where the most numerous is Sofia, but there are mothers who put their daughters Sofie, there could only be the statistics of the first, but not the second.
Even so, data from countries as populated as Brazil, China and India are lacking and that is why he does not dare to say that it is the most used girl’s name in the world. However, given its relevance, and that it is also on the rise, as we see in the following graph from the USA, where parents put their daughters Sofia, Sophia or Sophie, it does ensure that it is the most popular girl’s name of the world .
What do you think? Surprised? Do you know many “Sofía”?
